Unusual discharge after birth

willykink Aug 04, 2006 11:26 AM

Hopefully somebody on here has seen this or heard of it, but I'm a little worried about my biggest female boa. She gave birth to a bunch of pills this morning when I came home from work and me without even a clue she was gravid. Well, the yield was horrible although as most say on here, any live squirmy baby snakes is good. She ended up having around 20 slugs give or take one that I missed because it was crushed and 3 live babies, 1 of which stopped breathing shortly after birth. My dilemma deals with a "discharge" from the mothers vent that I must have missed on her first two litters or there is something really wrong with this one. I believe shes emptied herself of any leftover pills and I've got all the live babies I'm going to get but is it possible that a snake can have a pro-lapsed uterus? She's still been having contractions since early this morning (maybe about 8:15am or so) and I'm worried she's trying to push her insides right out. Hopefully with the couple of pics attached someone can either set my mind at ease or give me some helpful advice.

Brad

She could actualy be pushing her insides out. Get her to a vet, and good luck.

I agree.

She needs to see a Vet now!!

That's not a normal discharge and it does look like she's pushing her insides out.

They should be able to push that back in and stitch or staple it into place... Need to hurry though!
Good LUCK!

Thanx for the replies guys. She's at the vets as we speak and they said as they were attepmting to work it back inside it kind of slid back in on its own, and theyre setting her up with antibiotics for possible infection and only time will tell.

Are we assuming her breeding career is over?

Yes, the vet mentioned that since this happened once, the chance of it happening again is greater IF she was to breed again, which I will refrain from doing (one scare is bad enough with a pet thats been with me now for almost 10 years).

Good deal, it sounds like your vet knows what he/she is doing. A prolapse when caught early is an easy enough thing to fix, it is usually just when people wait to see what is going to happen that you get necrotic tissue that needs to be cut up and then you run the risk of HUGE internal infections. Sounds like you are most concerned with the outcome of the animal and Im glad to hear that your vet has already mentioned the posibility of reoccurance with breeding again. Good luck with this whole issue and please keep us up to date on how she is doing!

Sincerely,
Rose Aguilar
