difference in yearling sizes....

wisema2297 Aug 04, 2006 02:21 PM

just to show an example of a great feader and a "problem" feeder. The snow corn is now eating very well but has a lot of catching up to do. Both are 05 babies I acquired last year as hatchlings.

Just wondering, what length the larger one is there?
When my corn, Snail, was a baby I fed her pinkies for too long and was told I stunted her growth. At a little over a year and a half old she's now 29inches. How does this 'measure up' in comparison?

It can vary from snake to snake.
29 inches at 1 1/2 may be a little smaller then average but if she's eating I wouldn't worry too much.
I have an '02 snow that is only about 32 to 34 inches.
Some grow larger then others.
I have seen yearlings a lot bigger then her and I have seen yearlings only about 24 to 26 inches.
I also had a non-feeder hatchling that at a year old was a lot smaller then my other yearlings but by the time they hit two years they were just about the same size.
I would just feed her at a regular rate and let her grow how she will.
Just think, If she stays smaller she will be a lot cheaper on food and easier to house.
The snow I mentioned will not eat an adult mouse.
She refuses. She eats medium to large hoppers but anything bigger...no way.

frosty is 42 inches long now, he's grown six inches in a matter of months and well just tonight I realized he's getting alot bigger around, I fed him three mice a week ago, I feed him on fridays normally but since it's so late and I don't like to feed him at night, I dont know why, but he seems to eat better during the day than he does at night, I normally don't have a problem with him if I feed him during the day but at night he'll get downright grouchy after I feed him and kind of move around really fast prowling after his meal, during the day he doesnt do that really fast movements. Also the one and only time he regurged he was fed at night, I dont know if that makes a difference, but when I went back to feeding only during the daylight hours he never had a problem. I fiqured it had something to do with his lamp being on during the day and I turn his UV light off at night, I have a moonlight bulb as well, but I never use it as he doesn't much care for the light being on at night, thats when he's the most active during his non feeding days, he'll come out and cruise his tank and test his boundaries so to speak.

anyway, Im longwinded, is 42 inches too long??? Because until today he always seemed small and skinny to me, but well I started reading these posts and thought maybe I'm just paranoid here, cause it sounds like he's right on track here. Im such a paranoid parent lol. thanks for your patience!!!

NO!!! 42" isnt too long. thats what a growing snake is supposed to do, is grow... i have an ancient corn...gertrude...my brotehr get her when he was in 6th grade. and back then gertie was an adult....and shes still truckin' 5' something later....and many years later. i wish i knew how old she was when i got her...but my brother stopped feeding and watering her so i kinda inherited her. i know i'm 5'3" and shes pretty darn close. my guess is that she is.....um...around 13-16ish? and shes pretty gosh-darn mean too. my next largest corn is just at 5' and hes really big around...other than that i have 6' black rats?? but thats a different topic. just look forward to alot of growing and thickening up in the near future

lol i would never stop feeding my baby, he literally means the world to me. In fact when my mom and I had discussed us moving in together so we'd be able to make it easier on one another, I explained to her, Either Frosty is able to come along for the ride for the rest of my life, Or I can't become a part of this idea. She's since gotten over the fact that I have a snake. We just have an agreement that she wont be around when I remove him which is nightly, because well he gets alot of handling. I just lock my door lol. Anyway, my main concern is that he not become fat and lazy, right now he's long and trim and well I just cleaned his tank and I think I'm going to have to get rid of his plants because no matter how much I wash them, they still smell like snake poo!! So annoying when you know they're clean! Anyway, thanks for the reply and hopefully no matter how long he gets or how old, he wont become a grumpy ole man!!!

I think the only reason why gert is such a grumpy ole lady is b/c my brother never really held her much. but within the last year...no matter how much i hold her she bites and bites. and being as old as she is, i dont want her to mess up her lil teeth, so i just leave her be... i still spend time with her.... but i just look at her through the glass....shes so spoiled. she has a whole 55 gallon aquarium all to herself. what a way to retire!!!

the larger one measured close to 29 inches back in January. That was when he started taking adult mice. I would guess maybe 32-33 inches now.
