Has anyone on this board crossed an Everglades rat wth a Yellow rat? If so what do the snake look like?

Moast of the wild caught Glades you see offered are undoubtedly a cross between the two. They have a more muted orange ground color and yellower eyes. They make a rather uninteresting snake in my opinion.

I asked because I seen this snake in a local herp shop. It`s a male with dark eyes and a red tongue. It has the yellow rat`s stripes but a backgroud that was more dark tanish in color. Not quite what I thought a cross between the two might look like.

Well the yellow rats alone vary immensely and many forget this. You do see many different looks including orange-ish snakes well outside the range of any glades genes. So you may have a brownish orange snake with no glades influence or one from the cane fields with lots of glades influence. Glades are still out there in the wild, just ask crimsonking. He has a killer wc glades from the cane fields.

But as Mark said above there are many crosses out there and not enough yellow rat breeders. For many crossing a yellow with a glades makes them easier to market. There are so many under rated yellow rat morphs out there. How many you ask?? Enough to make you sick I say!!

Anyone have a gray headed cane field monster?? How about a big classic text book yellow??? Any wholesaler glades (aka crosses)?? How about a brown bodied snake with a bright yellow head??

I bet if 10 people respond to this with pics 7 of the pics will be field pics. It is just sad that there is such a slow market for yellows.

I agree, very under rated snakes. Yellows AND glades are both on my list but I just don't have the room or $ these days. Save me a pair and call me in 5 years!

You forgot to mention the North Carolina Greenish Ratsnake. Or how about the Outer Banks Ratsnake? There is also a natural sulphur yellow morph out there which can be quite attractive.

I totally agree with you, Yellow Ratsnakes make great 'pets' for many reasons. First, it has a diurnal and semi-arboreal lifestile, so you get to see it a lot. Second, it grows to 6 or 7 feet, which is just about right for most hobbyists. Third, it is hardy and very, very easy to keep. Fourth, it displays a lot of geographical variation which makes it highly collectable, and if that isn't enough for you there are also plenty of interesting cultivars to choose from. What more could you possibly want?

Indeed, a highly underrated snake.

I have to agree Herman for all those reasons.

... I just picked up this guy from a friend. Story is that he was field collected as a baby/juvy around 10 yrs. ago.
Pic is a little light. He's nice pink/orange.
Guess the locale?

At any rate, I think he'll get to breed my nicest female 'glades.

Mark,

1. Could you post your female glades and male in the same post?

2. The Yellow diversity shots are great. Is Yellow Rat number four from costal GA/SC?

3. What table do you have at Daytona?

Thanks,

Oh, and my big male is from Clewiston and doesn't look nearly as good as that one you've acquired!!!!
I found it in '99 as a hatchling about a mile from the first animal's Mom.

older shot of female in orange tree. (she's also the one climbing the palm)

and a pic I posted to try and show what they looked like to us from below when we'd find them (way back when)

Here's the male again. I'll have to get some pics of them both together.
Actually, we kinda tried the other day while cleaning. Russ put them both on a bird bath nearby while I cleaned the boxes and the male was all over her, biting and trying to breed her. She was having none of it and brushed him off. Pretty good since he's a 6'er.

All of the yellows in the post above were found in Tampa. Some north, some south.

Nice looking snakes posters. I went a head and bought the snake I talked about in th first feww posts. This snakes` color looks nothing like any of the snakes posted in this topic. He has the yellow rat`s stripes, but his background is more a tanish color. His belly is pure white from the neck down in till his lower third where it becomes pinkish in color. He`s about a year and a half old and over three feet in length and thickly built. Solid head coloration also (dark tan.)

I will try to post some pics in the next couple of weeks.
