Butterworms and feeding questions?

Staind_Ice Aug 04, 2006 10:17 PM

Could I feed Sage butterworms as a special treat? They're supposed to be very high in calcium and smell like fruit, but I dunno if they would be good for him or not...Also I think they're kinda big like 3/4 in. or larger.

Also how many 'medium' size crickets would be good for a full grown male per day he'll eat 12 if I give him that many...to much?

Millworms, how many how often if I can get them?

Any other live (or not live) treats he might enjoy?

I think that as long as you're feeding him a variety of insects, he should do fine with whatever you offer. I would absolutely offer butterworms sometimes if he likes them.

My experience is the faster the bug, the better my collareds like 'em. (Although some make an exception when it comes to waxworms.) I will sometimes offer them cockraoches or flying insects from outside. No one sprays at our house, so they're a good treat.

As far as "too many" crickets--I just don't buy it. Lizards aren't prone to overeating like we humans can be. If they eat lots of crickets it's because they're hungry. I always offer as many as they'll eat, and I only have one fat lizard. I like fat lizards, though. they're cute

I tried butterworms once...the lizards were very interested in them, and gobbled up a couple quickly, but 2 out of 3 lizards soon regurgitated them, so I never tried then again.

I'd go ahead and try them, but I wouldn't feed them more than one at first to see how they go down. Good Luck.

Its really strange but absolutely true, I feed them small and medium locusts (as well as crickets, daddy long legs and the odd moth), they get excited a twitch tails the moment they hear locusts jumping around in the box, they usually cant see the box but the sound gets their taste buds working every single time.... Funnily they dont get anywhere near as excited when its crickets jumping around making a racket, its the locusts they go wild for.....

Not as stupid as science would have you believe

Staind_Ice Aug 07, 2006 01:01 PM

Huh...locuts but not crickets...Sage loves his crickets but I've never given him locuts...so I dunno! I just order him some differnt kinds worms so were fixin' to find out what he likes!

I actually had a really big locust escape the box a few weeks ago and Yoda pounced on it before I had a chance to get it out, and then he ate a smaller one on top, he's a greedy guts.

I wouldn't want to feed him more big ones, they're for the tarantula but they really do go nuts for the small ones, its hilarious, they bounce off the walls in the same way the locusts do

Yeah I know it, sometimes the crickets crawl on Sages tail and it makes him crazy so he jumps around and eats them like "ha..that'll teach you to mess with MY tail" lol.

They will, if nothing else provide more variety to their diet and humour both you and your lizards at the same time. I'm not sure how easily obtainable they are on your side of the pond but as they say variety is the spice of life!

Others use roaches but we cant get them here in England otherwise I'd be sampling those too

Staind_Ice Aug 07, 2006 04:13 PM

I've never seen locusts around here, and as for roachs they're everywhere in Texas but I hate them with a passion, they make me sick and I'd be happy if they were whipped of the planet, lol....sooooooooooooooooooooooooo no roachs for Sage unless they find their way in his tank all on their own. But, you can order them on-line if you want to try them. http://www.nyworms.com/roaches.htm but if you haven't dealt with roachs, they're nasty nasty creatures and they multiply FAST and once they get in your house they're a pain to get ride of. But when you live in Texas there is no avioding them so I could be biased. Like I said I hate 'em, lol.
