Re-Using aquarium glass, need help!

tjg Aug 05, 2006 04:31 PM

I have built many enclosures and modified glass aquariums. But I need specific help on this project: I am using the glass from a 37 gal tall tank (1/4" glass)as the sliding doors for my new snake enclosure. I need input on removing the black plastic molding on top and bottom. I think a dremel with careful cutting would work. I know once I have the frame off I can use a razor blade to seperate the panels. Any input would be great. Eeven if I end up breaking the glass its worth the risk because new glass is probably over $100 and I only paid $20 for the tank.

If you read our discussion further down on glass, you will find that most of us recommend laminated or Safety glass for sliding doors. This is primaraly because of the nice edge and rounded corners, far superior to any plate or tempered glass corners you will find.

With this being said glass companies at least most of them do not charge extra for sanded and rounded corners. This service alone will IMO justify a few extra dollers spent on glass vs taking an aquarium apart.

If I was you and I am not, I would at least call and get a quote on the pieces of glass you need. In the end I think you will get more out of the aquarium as an aquarium than you will as glass pieces.

Just my opinion, good luck.

Well I see no reason to not do what you are doing so I'll answer the question.
I have used a stiff putty knife before to get the piece off you are talking about. You pretty much have to just break up the plastic to get it off.
I have taken a couple aquariums apart that have gotten cracked or in some other way broken and used the glass for sliding doors like you are wanting to do and as long as the glass isnt tempered take it down and have the edges sanded and it will work great.
