go ahead everyone laugh at me! . . herping story from today. . .

nathan23 Aug 03, 2003 05:09 PM

Well it was my girlfriends moms birthday, so we went to her grandparents house for dinner and cake and icecream. She lives out in the woods plenty of critters running around. Everytime we go ,I go looking for snakes and salamanders. Every time I come up with nothing! Which for me is absolutly pathetic. They have a couple piles of logs that are prime spots for snakes. No one ever warned me about what else was living in those logs! And out of the hundreds of times I've been herping I've never had this happen. I was turning over logs and finding nothing but insects and spiders. Well there was this one log that I got a feeling that something was under it. And boy was I right! I went to go turn it over and noticed that it was rotten. Which ment there was a good chance there were salamanders. So I went to turn it again and it broke open in half. Nothing for a split second then hundreds if not a thousand yellow jackets swarmed out and gave me a good run! And boy do those things sting! And they can sting you multiple times unlike a bee. No body there warned me that they were really common in their wood piles. I guess I learned my lesson! Well maybe not, after the stinging went down I went back out looking for snakes again. Once a herper always a herper , I'm not gonna let a thousand yellow jackets stop me from catching a snake!

I hope everyone got a good laugh out of this I know I did.

peace,
nathan

Actually, I'm glad your OK. You really could have had a bad reaction to those stings and ended up in the hospital or worse.
More than glad your still with us.
Take care,
Karen

and I hardly ever see any snakes around here where I live. Even when I go out hunting, where there is no development, I hardly ever find stuff. I do find eastern diamondbacks from time to time, and there is a lot of black racers, but I want to find something else too...lol. Maybe I am just looking the wrong spots, but the habitat seems so perfect...o well.

Oh nathan23 yellow jackets nest in just about everything LOL. My dad was stung several times a few years ago at the camp when trying to reshingle the camp porch. Turns out there were three wasp nests in the eaves of the porch. Couple weeks ago my mother was stung by a yellow jacket that was nesting inbetween the bricks of their house.

Best thing to do, watch any potential log/wood pile for wasps. If you see some flying around it, most likely there is a nest in it. Good luck on your next herp hunting day.
