Respiratory Infection?

goliathbd Aug 05, 2006 08:04 PM

My beardie appears to have some kind of infection. Both eyes are closed all the time and upon examination, it appeared there was a yellow crust at the edge of his lids. After moistening with water, I was able to remove some discharge, but his eyes remain shut. Also, I have removed crusted discharge from his nostrils several times, and he constantly sits with his mouth open. I have ended up feeding him by hand with a syringe and powdered supplement, as he doesn't want to eat, (or cannot eat with closed eyes). Occasionally I've been able to wash down small meal worms, but mostly he spits them out. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms with their beardie before? Please help.

Dont waste anymore time and take youre lizard to the vet it is almost certaintly some type of infection and if it respitory will not easily go away on its own make sure to keep your enclosure very warm about 100 to 110 till he gets better or a vet says so

What you are describing is an Upper Respiratory Infection. From the amount of discharge you are seeing, it is a pretty bad one. Take your dragon to a vet ASAP to get treatments.

Upper respiratory infections are caused typically by too much humidity in the dragon's tank or temperatures that are too cold. Re examine your husbandry to see if your temps are in the correct range (95-115F, the higher end for babies, adults the lower end) and humidty doesn't exceed 50%.

Changing the cage conditions won't cure your dragon at this state, he needs vet attention and treatment which can include antibiotic injections and oral medications.
