Brooksi natural range

FunkyRes Aug 05, 2006 11:45 PM

First - anybody know of a good older field guide from when brooksi was recognized as its own subspecies?

Second - could someone with knowledge on natural brooksi provide any information on the natural native range and habitat?

Third - anyone with "natural" non morph brooksi adults care to post some pictures?

Only eastern field guide I have is Conant/Collins (Peterson) 3rd edition (1991) - and it does not treat brooksi as a separate subspecies.

Thanks!

I cannot help you with the older field guides.
I have asked a few times here for people to post their pics of brooksi or what was sold to them as such.
Not many takers.
Here's what I consider to be as close as you can get. I bought a pair of sibs to this guy from the owner, Peter Lindsay (his pic too)that can be traced back to the "old days" canals

Maybe a higher band count would be even better. The babies I have have quite a few.
Here's one the day I received it.

Now here's my FL king from my own breeders.

Not too bad either.
I hope others post pic of theirs.

here is my guy, I acquired him in 1997 from a grntleman named Dick Deuel. At the time he told me where he acquired his stock, originally from w/c but I do not recall. No morphs involved.

Thanks for the pics - I might see if the biology department and/or library at the local under funded community college has an older eastern or florida field guide, they just might.

You need to aquire the First Edition of the Peterson Field Guide.
This was pupblished in 1958 as "A Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of the United States and Canada East of the 100th Meridian" by Roger Conant, Houghton Mifflin Co. This one is out of print, but you might find it a used bookstore, or a swapmeet.

I have a copy but can't lay hands on it at this time - I will look for it.

In the mean time you might look at "Kingsnakes and Milksnakes" by Ronald G. Markel, which has a fairly detailed map.

Cheers!
