So what do you get when you breed....???

Kerby... Aug 06, 2006 09:21 AM

What do you get when you breed a Blizzard cal king with a Mendota (hypermelanistc) cal king?

I did this pairing this year, not knowing for sure what to expect. The clutch is hatching right now with two out of the egg. I can see the heads of the rest. They should all be out of the eggs today.

So, what would you expect to get?

I will post pics later.

I'd guess dark babies with some interesting aberant paterns.

either that or a purple people eater...

Well not knowing what a blizzard really is, I couldn't guess.
My feeling is that you'd get some aberrant brown and yellow guys...

I'd agree with Mark. But, without knowing what genes are in the Blizzard (besides the melanistic albino traits), it'd be impossible to guess.

I have a clutch pipping now from a striped banana X a striped snow (melanistic albino)
and have gotten mostly banded hatchlings!!! I'm going to post on this after the last one pips out because of how it SEEMS to defy genetic expectations.

Question, by "snow" are you referring to Blizzard?

Question, how do you know that your "snow"/Blizzard is striped, as Blizzards are basically patternless?

Besides the recessive genes, breeding a striped to a banded will give you some stripes, some bandeds, and some aberrants.

>>>Question, by "snow" are you referring to Blizzard?

Yes, I know you don't like the term "snow" because it's usually used for Albino X anery/axanthic morphs. I always considered a patternless as a blizzard, and a reduced pattern (through melanism) as a snow.

>>>>Question, how do you know that your "snow"/Blizzard is striped, as Blizzards are basically patternless?

A snow/blizzard carries and shows 2 genetic traits, melanism and albinism. Which mine DOES show both, just not to the extreme of her being patternless. The best description I could give of her is she would "key out" to being a "nitida", or at least an albino one.

>>>Besides the recessive genes, breeding a striped to a banded will give you some stripes, some bandeds, and some aberrants.

True, but I bred striped to striped, in which case I SHOULD get mostly or all striped, even if they both carry banding in their genetic background somewhere. I've only gotten ONE, MAYBE 2 that I'd consider striped, all the others are either banded or aberrant banded, with 2 left to hatch out of 9. So, even if you set aside the snow/blizzard traits as just "normal" albinos, something weird is happening in this clutch!!

Except that breeding two stripes from different locales does not always produce all stripes, especially if one of the stripes is an aberrant striped.

After the last one hatches out, I'll post pics of the breeders and all the hatchlings. I realize that the Banana trait is a "designer" morph, and could have anything and everything involved in it's make up. The same could be true for the snow/blizzard. But in any case, typically striped X striped SHOULD throw stripes or at least mostly stripes no matter what was used to make them.

Both melanism and albinism are recessive traits, so the blizzard is carrying (but not showing) some type of underlying trait. Under it's melanistic trait (which is eliminated by the albino trait) it could be striped, banded, aberrant, etc......

Correct.

Not eliminated, but covered.

Correct, but you basically can't see it (sometimes in the sunlight you can see faint yellow bands on some Blizzards.

So yes breeding a Blizzard (displaying 2 recessive genes at one time, albino & hypermelanism) to a Mendota (hypermelanism) will produce all hypermelanisms that are 100% het for albino.

The only thing unusual with this clutch is that they are BANDED hypermelanisms. In the past I bred a Mendota (hypermelanism) to a banded, producing babies that are all banded and het for hypermelanism. I bred 2 of those banded (het for hypermelanism) back to each other producing bandeds and hypermelanism that were aberrant just like the Mendotas.

THERE WERE CRITICS OUT THERE THAT SAID BLIZZARDS WERE JUST AN ALBINO MEXICAN BLACK KING, from an albino cal king x Mexican Black.

So it was nice to see some banded hypermelanisms.

i believe you are on the right track for producing these.

I've got 2 clutches that I am hoping will produce some of those that haven't hatched yet.

Plus, now that I've got a male chocolate I will have plans for him next year.

The world needs more nice chocolate Cal's! I could use a pair or two for my collection too. JETZEN, I know you usually don't breed your collection, but you have to make an exception for those beautiful chocolate Cal's that you have. Good luck Kerby!

Thanks, I do not produce the numbers like I used to about 5-10 years ago when I was producing over 500 babies a year. Last year I produced just a little over 200 baby cal kings, this year just under 200. Next year will be about 200-250.

I'm doing mostly special projects now, which makes it fun....I just have to be patient.
