HELP!! African Dwarf Frogs Dying

yasanth Aug 03, 2003 05:39 PM

I have had my 29g tank for 1 year now and had 5 frogs to start with along with some fish. They all lived for about 6 months and then started dying until I had only 1 left. They didn't all die at the same time, it was a gradual thing. I think 2 died of starvation because they were very skinny toward the end, and I used to have shark catfish who used to eat everything very fast and wouldn't give others a chance to eat. I gave my catfish away after the 2nd skinny frog died, so I thought the remaining 2 should be okay. Oh, first died when the catfish knocked the end part of the filter and got sucked into the filter system. Well, the 4th frog died about a month ago, so after I did water change I went out and got 3 more. 2 of those 3 died. I did check the water and the nitrate was really high, so I cleaned the tank again and waited about 1 week and tested the water and went out and got 2 more frogs. I just found one dead this morning. I can't figure out what is going on. I just checked my water again, and it seems the nitrate level is going up again. I just did water changed about 1 week ago and water was just fine when I went out to get the frogs. Could the nitrate level be killing these frogs? Any advise would be appreciated.

You'll have to get more descriptive with how you are taking care of them and their set up. Is the water dechlorinated? What type of filtration? What type of food? What type of Gravel? What type of plants? What's the tempertaure? What else is in the tank with the dwarf frogs? Anything you can think of.

I would give them their own tank with an undergravel filter. They like shallower water than tropical fish (7-10 inches) as they must surface to breathe. They also prefer a totally carnivorous diet of blood worms, water fleas, occasional pieces of fish, crustaceans, while most tropical fish are omnivores. The dry amphibian pellets aren't suited for them, even if they may eat them. They are rather dirty little guys, so need even more srict attention to water quality, and even more frequent water changes than your fish.
