Some new pictures of Sobek, she keeps..

SHvar Aug 07, 2006 01:09 AM

Getting bigger and bigger.
In the first picture she was 6ft 4 inches, it was taken in winter I think, I have not measured her in a while.
Look at the differences in these 2, and shes almost 5 years old now. Shes going through a rapid shed and her colors are changing alot, shes turning to similar colors that Shadow, my other cross had, charcoal black with bright white, very very dark shiny black.

Her new colors..

Just hanging out while I clean her water dish.

Thank you for taking the time to look at the pics of my little girl...

as a 5'4" Male, I'm scared *laugh*

She's pretty though, I'm really temped to get a black/white throat, but with my Giant Tegus and Sav already, I don't know if I can afford another giant mouth to feed, but god is it a dream

Great pics. Are you sure that's a female? She is huge My 15 year old prehensile tail skink died last week so I have no reptiles left(Sweetpea/blackthroat died 7 weeks ago).I really love my monitors and can't decide on what to get to fill the void.Monitors are my favorite, but I blame myself whenever anything dies no matter what the reason and feel like I shouldn't get another.Great job with yours (I'm still in mourning)a fox dug up my graves but thankfully didn't eat my reptiles.Maybe they didn't like the smell. It still bothers me.

2 months old from Pro-Exotics from Rob Faust. She is the same girl that I had to have 44 eggs removed at 1.5 yrs old and decided to have her ovaries removed.
Shes the same lizard that comes to the cage door and seeks attention from me when I am in the basement, a memeber of the family always to me.

Do you know where any of her siblings are? Just wondering if they're all lunker lizards too?!
How and why do they get egg bound? Were you attempting to breed her or wasn't she old enough for that?

Sometimes the female can have eggs even if there are no male. They are a bit like chickens, I recond, which will lay unfertilized eggs.

Years ago, one was Andrew Owens, and a few others that had her siblings, most I venture to guess never lived very long, and or were sold when owners lost interest in one species, then sold them for others.
She became eggbound during a time when I was tranferring her between cages, I had her in one too small, I was building another when she was in one in between sizes, during this time she became somewhat dehydrated internally.
I tranferred her to the new cage with deep dirt (the wrong stuff), she swelled, and swelled, did not eat much at all, basked alot, and lost a bit of reserve fat.
I consulted a few more experienced keepers at this time, as well the experience of one who bred BTs and had an eggbound female (but his was bound with fertile eggs). I used their experiences to estimate when action was needed and verified what I expected through an xray at the vets, she was full of eggs. At that time I discussed with this vet what I wanted done, that was as soon as possible to remove the eggs, I also asked if he could prevent this from ever possibly happening by removing her ovaries, he agreed and we set a week out as the time, also to give her a total of about 4 weeks time to lay on her own in the new dirt that was put in as fast as possible when problems started occuring.
With a female approaching breeding age you must have the correct conditions to allow egg laying, proper hydration, etc, they need this for a period of time before the cycle, not interuptions and stress.
Its was bad luck, bad timing, and my bad choices, regardless, as far as reptiles go she is the best reptile pet I have ever seen or met period, therefore I felt an urgency in her safety and recovery, which occured, she healed shut from surgery in 1-2 weeks with an expected time of stitch removal of 1 month, she shed almost all the stitches out beforehand and never slowed down growing.
I wish there were others I knew of with her siblings now.
Rob Faust did a beautiful job producing this girl.

They do not need males, they produce eggs when they are kept in conditions allowing them to do so.
She has been introduced to other monitors over the years with the same reaction to all but a few, those were a few from other species. Her own species is disliked by her, she tries to kill albigs.
I know of one male currently that may be close enough if they got along to introduce, but he is seriously afraid of her, and also noticeably smaller at 5.5ft. She would kill him probably the first chance she got.
