It's been a while, but i need your help

funkymonkey Aug 07, 2006 07:46 AM

All,

Hope you are all doing ok, not posted for sometime as being doing this and that, playing a little with a beardie dragon programme, but he collareds always win.

So i am back.

but with problems,

Been a really tough year, not sure if it was due to the crazy hot summer we have had or what,

Lost my c.collaris male that i bred myself about 4 months ago.
completely out of the blue and no apparent reason for it.

Gutted was an understatment, Wonky was such a cool dude.

now, i have got problems with Little miss and stumpy.

Little miss broke her leg a few months back,, that set and is now 90% as good as it used to be, she laid eggs not so long ago, all fine, but recent weeks, and again for no apparent reason she has stopped eating,

English vets aren't that good with collareds and am on the verge of loosing her i think.
We have tried to force liquids in her but with not much joy.

any one any idea what may have happened ????

nothing has changed, no new reps, cleaned out regularly, bugs are all gut loaded, the only thing i can think is that their cool end of their viv has been warmer than normal because i cant keep it below room temp due to this heatwave thing we are in.

I have kept their hotspot under control,

thats poor little miss's story.

Stumpy meanwhile has got eye infections, she is a great mum and really buries her eggs deep, but she always gets sand in her eyes,
this time she has not managed to shift it, so trip to vets and 10 days or drops later and still we are struggling,
she sits still all day with her eyes normally closed, the drops free them up but even after that, she still is not the same and i worry that we are going to loose her as well.

She is only 3 years old.

thats about it really, all very sad news for my first post back on here and many negative thoughts going through my mind over the whole lizard keeping thing as i feel so useless that we cannot do much for the poor little mites.

anyone got any suggestions ??????

many thanks and hope you are all well.

Funky.

From everything you have said about the one who died (Wonky) so sorry and Little Miss and Stumpy I would have to think a bacterial infection is going on.

I personally do not think Stumpy has sand in her eyes. The collareds usually protrude their eyeballs (looks weird) but they sorta looked popped and that gets debris out.

Closed eyes and sitting lethargic /inactive and no appetites and dying for no apparent reason all suggests respiratory/ bacterial infections. If this is why they would need an antibiotic to help them.

As far as feeling helpless, well I think we have all had that feeling one time or another, maybe more than we would like to admit. But then there are alot of lizards we all have helped to have a good /healthy life as well, so Hang in there

But I would have them checked for bacterial infections. Let us know how ya make out. I sure hope they can perk up real soon.

I would make sure their temps are warm enough. You ,mentioned having the Cool end cooler...

100 - 105 Basking and High 80's to 90 for the REST of the tank.

temps are all fine as they are in the small quarantine vivs which are spot opn temp wise.

I was thinking this sort of thing,,

but what baffled me was that i lost wonky 3 months if not more ago so plenty of sand changed and clean outs etc since, and vet has confirmed that she could see sand and damage to stumpy's eyes,,, i can understand her situation and we might be lucky with her.

but little miss isn't happy. how do vets in the USA administer Antibiotics ?? injection ?? as i dont think our vet can do this,, seem to get the impression that she hasn't dealt with lizards as small....and collareds really are unknowmn to UK vets it seems.

an oral antibiotic, a liquid, I don't happen to like injections if they can be avoided.

See what others think your problem is Funky, maybe they can toss it around abit and come up with some thoughts. Have they ever been treated for parasites/worms?

Hiya,

I've had issues finding a herp vet in the WMids, a web search showed a few within a 50 mile radius, but for emergency's sake I contacted a local reptile charity and they gave me the name of one just up the road, maybe you could try the same?

The one I called only have one branch in Dudley, so maybe a different one closer to Bedford (I think thats home for you??)
