CBS4 (Denver, Colorado) 02 August 06 Beloved Pet Survives 2 Months With No Food, Water (Paul Day)
Denver: A Denver woman refused to give up hope that her pet was still alive even though friends said it was most likely dead.
Carmen Idlet had to leave her pet turtle behind when the apartment building she lived in was evacuated in early June because of asbestos contamination.
The female painted turtle named "Baby" was left cooped up in her aquarium. Idlet said she made countless phone calls but nobody would help.
Since the units at Highline Terrace Apartments were sealed up, the residents were prevented from returning to their apartments.
"People kept telling me 'no she's dead' and I said 'no I won't believe that,'" Idlet said.
After two months of agony, she was relieved Wednesday to find out Baby was still alive and survived without food or fresh water.
"I just fell to the floor and thanked God because she doesn't deserve that," Idlet said.
Baby was finally retrieved in what was an overdue rescue by an environmental contractor.
Baby had the chance to stretch her legs once she was out of the aquarium.
"She'll walk where ever she wants to go," Idlet said.
Property manager Tina Lombardi arranged the reunion between Idlet and her beloved pet.
"She's a reptile, she's always been a survivor," Idlet said.
She said the first thing she'll do for Baby is treat her to live goldfish which is her favorite meal.
