Question...again...

Staind_Ice Aug 07, 2006 01:09 PM

Always questions for y'all! Sage was sitting with his mouth open for a while the other day just sitting there mouth open and all...does that mean he's to hot? I turned off the basking light but that didn't seem to make a differnce and he didn't go in his little hiddy hole to cool off (which is on the cool side of the tank). Anyway...he acts fine, eats well and is active so I was just wondering...

Hey,

Normally its me asking the questions, but I looked this up recently and Eve left a post about "thermoregulating" or "thermoregulation", do a search on the forum, she explains different scenarios, both good and bad.... I think she likened it to a dog panting to regulate its temperature

Look it up, Eve explained it far better than I can!

When they sit under the basking light and hang their mouth open they are Gaping, perfectly normal way of cooling off, like panting is for a dog.

Sure they can just move and evenually they do but yeah it's normal. (as long as they are healthy and acting fine in all other areas.)

I had also mentioned that A lizard will hold his mouth open if having breathing disress also, from say a respiratory infection. They will keep head pointing up towards the ceiling and you may notice difficulty in breathing or hear a popping sound when they breath.

*** But in your case it sounds normal and he is GAPING then returns to normal and shuts mouth***
