TonyZ Aug 07, 2006 06:32 PM

i was told by the breeder that they were snow x leucestic, but they pretty much look normal to me, will they lighten or stay normal, will they carry the genes for both or just one morf.
i would really appreciat your opinions

from what i have been told before, the term leucestic does not exist in bearded dragons in the U.S. the breeders who do advertise leucestic are mostly "marketed leucestic"

that being said, yes if they are snow x marketed leucestic they will lighten up as they grow. my hypo-orange x snow-normal babies are much lighter out of the egg than the ones you posted.

ok so that makes them het for marketed luecestic or hypomelanistic i think? and this gene will not affect the color of them but possibly there offsping later on, and the snow part will lighten them so does that make snow more of a line breed thing than genetic. and how close to white can i expect them to get?
please correct me if im wrong in my assumptions im still trying to understand the whole genetics thing
thanks

its hard to explain and i dont understand all of it myself when it comes to what generation and so on. id contact the breeder you bought them from, and ask them. it all depends on what their parents were, and what their grandparents were and so on. if their mother was 100% sow and their father is 100 marketed leucistic then that would make them 50/50 snow x marketed luecistic. at least to my knowledge.

yeah i agree...key word was " IF " the mother was snow and father was a leucy then they would be....but, from my experiences with breeding...you got yourself some nice looking normal dragons there. you may want to contact the breeder. i hope you didn't end up paying the price i would think that a snow X leucy might be. Even if he claims that the parents were het snow x het leucy, is most likely fancy for normal.

unfortunatly after i recieved them the breeder decided to no longer return my emails, and during the whole lost in shipping thing i had going on he was real quick to respond, after i got them i asked him to send me pic of the parents for my records, and that was it no more contact
well thanks for your input

My hypo babies they have lightened up after each shed, I have also talked to ohter breeders and I was informed that the hatchlings come out 'normal looking' however they are lighter in overall color. I was also told animals with high white usually turn out to have better coloring as adults. They may take up to one year to reach their full color, or lack there of, potential.

For gentetics nobody can beat ball python sites, Kevin McCurly (sp?) has a great book which explains het's, ratio's in breeding, co-dom and dom genes, recessive and simple recessive genes and pretty much every genetic.

Best of Luck,
Jos
