13 Out of 17 Slugs!?!?!

Adam105 Aug 07, 2006 07:03 PM

One of my females just layed her first clutch. I expected it to be relatively small being that it was her first. To my surprise, she laid 17 eggs! However, 13 of those were slugs. What is up with that?! I have heard of a good amount of infertile eggs, but 13 out of 17?! The male was only a year old (but 4 feet) if that matters. All comments welcome...

i know its possible....the male could have a low fertility rate...or vice versa. personally, i'd try 1 more year....if its the same... try to female to another male the following year and then you will find out whos the "not so good breeder"

I'm not pretending I know much, if anything, about breeding and growth etc but 4 foot in a year?! That sounds like an awfully short length of time to get to that sorta size.

The male was only a year old (but 4 feet) if that matters.

Oooh yeah. That matters alot. Young males (2 years old) can often have reduced fertility (though not always). A male that's only 1 year old is even more likely to have reduced fertility. Give him a few years and he'll probably come up to speed.
