Can someone identify this albino snake?

sogie69 Aug 03, 2003 07:01 PM

I found this little guy under my dog's house after mowing. I apparently clipped off the tip of it's tail. It was pretty agitated when I took the picture and was striking at my hand through the glass. Had been very docile until then. It had just shed the day before, so maybe that was why it was so defensive.(??) I'd like to know what it is before I release it. The tail has healed fine and he eats crickets. THANKS.

This is the side view that better shows it's markings. Sorry the images are so large. I thought they would have been reduced for the post.

It is almost surely an escaped pet. There have been a few albinos caught in the wild, but that looks like an escaped pet. I suggest you don't release it (particularly if you don't live in SoCal).

I'd like to see pics of where you said you hit it with the Lawn mower. I have a feeling this is either an escaped animal or a BS post.

You better either tell this snake that it isn't a Cali King or tell it that it wasn't supposed to eat those crickets when it was obviously hungry. That would have been about the only thing that it could have found for food here other than a skink or lizard or something.

Notice in the second picture the cricket (put in there before I fed the snake a mouse) climbing on the rock. And if you look at the second picture you can see the wasted crickets right against the big rock at the first bend of the snake below it's head.

Other view of tail. If you still smell BS you'd better check your drawers.

Sogie69,
You must pardon my Apprehension to posts such as this....It is clearly an Albino Cal-King. If you say it has eaten Crickets, then it has. Due to your location, I would make the assumption that it's an escaped pet. Cal-kings will eat rodents, snakes, lizards (including skinks) and appearently....Crickets.
As far as smelling BS, I didn't say I "smelled" anything.....So you may want to take a little of your own advise.
Congrats on your new addition.

What a beautiful snake!!! He's wild caught? I'm not sure what type of snake it is, but I know there are people on the boards who would want to breed it to something.

You neglected to say where in the world you found it, but it looks to me like a California kingsnake. You may want to switch it off crickets & over to appropriately sized mice, preferably pre-killed.

I found it in Mobile, Alabama. Will definitely change over to the mice. Would you say that it is a lost pet or a wild snake? Either way I've got to get rid of it. If it is wild then it will be released, and if it was probably a pet then I'll try to find someone who wants it.

i think its an albino california king nice find wish i could find one of those

Andy_G Aug 05, 2003 01:59 PM

It is a very nice California Kingsnake, and undoubtedly an escaped pet, you should definitely keep it or give it to me!!!Lol.

Hotshot Aug 05, 2003 06:32 PM

This is a California Kingsnake. It has to be an escaped pet, as these are not native to the locale it was caught in. You shouldnt release it into the wild. The best thing to do is find someone who is willing to take care of it.

Well I got the snake a mouse today which didn't last long at all. He must have been pretty hungry and tired of those crickets. Looks like I will try to keep it, but I know nothing about the care for one of these things. Right now it's in an acrylic box only about 12" square. I will get a better home for it, but in the mean time..... how often do I need to feed it? ..... are the rocks in the picture adequate or do I need something else? ..... Where can I find information on the care & needs of this snake????

Hotshot Aug 06, 2003 09:56 AM

And if you have any questions feel free to ask and congrats on deciding to keep it. Cali kings are very easy to keep as long as you have the correct setup and temps.

As for feeding, I feed my snakes 2 pinkies/fuzzies every 3 or 4 days until they are big enough to eat hoppers. Then I feed them 2 hoppers every 6 days.
Hope this helps
