Suddenly Aggressive Yearling

zookeepnhippie Aug 07, 2006 10:56 PM

Hey
I was out of town for three weeks and had a friend watching my snakes. He was changing water and checking temps, but isnt a snake guy and didnt want to take them out. Anyway, my yearling male has been really pissy since my wife and I got back the other day. I fed him thinking that that would take care of it, but he is still acting a lot different than he did before. Does he just need to get used to being out and held again, or is there anything else i need to check for. Temps are 85 top in the day and high 70s at night.

Thanks A Lot

I had the same thing happen, nbut I didn't even leave lol. One of my males that was mabey a little older than a year just suddenly would strike at me when he didn't used to. ??? Don't know why and he kinda calmed down but sometimes he just doesn't want to let me touch him.

If its real important to you to have a calm boa thean all I can say is try to hadle him a decent amount every week, and maybe feed him outside of his cage. Good luck.

He is never fed in his cage, and im not going to stop handling him just because hes got an attitude, I just wanted to make sure this sudden aggression was not a sign of sickness.
Thanks

My guess is that he's just going through his teen years =). Just watch for other things that could piont to sickness.

Not a sign of sickness, but it is a sign of something. Maybe your friend was mean to him? Maybe he just had bad vibes as far as snake was concerned. If that happened to me, I would never let that person near my snake again. My advice is handle that snake twice a day everyday until it is calm when handled again (except for two days after eating and when it's in a shed cycle). Just like you're probably planning.

BTW your daytime highs are also not high enough unless you have an additional hot spot for basking. The high should be 88-90, and the hot spot can be as hot as 95.

Good luck hippie!

Simply a "SIGN" that your snake is a "wild animal" regardless of
whether its CBB or not.
One often overlooked "human issue" is the assumption of "tame and or trained" Neither apply correctly.
Your snake "tolerates" you.
