Kingsnake behaviour and rain

FunkyRes Aug 08, 2006 06:36 AM

We just had a short thunderstorm and a little bit of rain, but not much.

All five of my kingsnakes are out on the prowl in their enclosures. All of them.

I know that rodents tend to come out after the rain, at least that's when my cats are most likely to catch them.

I'm guessing (even though they are inside) that this is some kind of a natural hunting response to the weather?

Both of my young males refused fuzzies on Sunday, but they had just eaten hoppers a few days earlier. But even they are out.

Many reptiles are sensitive to barometric presure and the smell of ozone. (both ascociated with thunder storms) Boa people will tell you that their snakes go crazy, breeding, dropping babies etc after a storm. I have thought that I have noticed increased activity with my cal kings after some storms, but sometimes they do nothing at all.

This is just a guess but I would imagine that the smell/feel of storm probobly stimulates desert snakes to come out and search for water. As a side effect of all being awake and moving around they probobly run into each other, as well as prey animals that are out doing the same thing. Who knows...?
