Question about Helix thermostat

moonpie Aug 03, 2003 07:23 PM

I got a Helix thermostat about a week ago, and I have a question for anybody who owns one. I noticed that the when the temp has leveled off, my digital thermometer reads 4 to 5 degrees colder than the Helix. I use paper towels as substrate, and the probes are side by side (and they run constantly). The digital thermometer is a cheap one, but it seems to read the room temp pretty close. Has anyone else ever noticed this? Have any of you ever used a laser gun thermometer? We have a laser thermomter at work that is calibrated, and I will try to bring it home to check the Helix out. I was just worried that people using dimmer type rheostats may be getting their cages too hot is they are basing it on some of the cheaper digital thermometers like I have. Any thoughts on this?

We're not using the Helix here, but he ESU's. Haven't had any problems yet with $15-20 digitals placed along side the probes to monitoro temps. We also use a laser temp gun that always seems to read about 3-4 degrees cooler than what the digital and thermostat are set at. I would be interested to see what your temp gun reads since it is calibrated.
