Optimal Breeding Size (kinda lengthy)

medyssa Aug 08, 2006 12:33 PM

I am looking to buy another female Brazilian as the one that bred for me this year will be leaving with my stepfather when he moves out and divorces my mother. This leaves me with no breeding prospects for this fall unless I can find an adult female, preferrably before halloween. I have found a couple of available females, one of them is a good prospect and would actually come as a pair from fauna classified, but unfortunately is it somewhat agressive. The other option is a snake that is 2.5 years old and is only 3' long. I thought that dave from Rainbows r us stated in his BRB breeding 101 that the best size would be 4' and that makes sense to me as I would assume a smaller snake would have a harder time breeding and birthing. I could feed the smaller snake up as much as possible and hope for the best, but I would rather wait until next fall if I have to, while keeping my eye open for other prospects.
Other factors are contributing to my choice between the two females that I have found, including that the snake that is only 3 feet long comes with a cage and has a gorgeous pattern and awesome coloring with near perfect crescents, whereas the one from faunaclassified comes with a male for $100 more, but I will need to work with this female to get it to be less agressive and will need to pay shipping.
Any advice would be helpful, and if you know anyone who is selling an adult female please let me know. unless I find a female soon my second clutch prospects for next spring are slim, as a quarter of my collection will be taken away from me as of September 1st or thereabouts. All in all, the situation I am in is kinda sucky, considering that I only have a little bit of money to spend, few options and a jerk of a stepfather ruining my breeding aspirations with his greed for snakes that he only cares about having because I want them. *sigh*
Sorry for the little rant.
I appreciate any help as well as the posts that all of the members put up.

Jess,
....Females need to be over five feet and three and a quarter pounds. Five feet six inches and around four pounds is better. I would be careful about buying either of those females that are for sale. 3 feet is very short for one that is 2 and a half years old. I have some that are not quite a year old that are 36 inches long. There has to be a reason why the snake is so small. An adult BRB that is agressive may have been kept by someone who did not know how to tame it. They are pretty easy to tame. You have to wonder what else they did not know how to do raising the snake. I have a couple adult females that are lousy breeding prospects. If someone is a breeder and they have an adult for sale it may be because it is not a good breeder. If I was looking for an adult female to breed I would want to see it in person or buy if from someone I know and trust. The big shows would be the best place to see several for sale to pick out the right one.
Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I do plan on looking at the Sacramento Reptile show the 8th and 9th of September, hopefully I can find something either on Kingsnake or Fauna before then but more than anything I dont want to resort to buying one so late as when the reptile show is in San Jose in November. I would prefer to have the female quarantined and at least eat four times and shed at least once in my care before I begin to plan on breeding, leaving me with very little time to breed in the fall and winter. Thanks for the tips.

Jess,
....I will be at the Daytona Expo next week. If you want I can watch for one for you. I can even call you while I am at the show if I see the right snake for you.

Hey Jess, didn't know you were so close, I will be at the Sac show as well. Don't know yet if I'll have a booth or not, my adults are not cooperating.....need babies ASAP to have them ready for the show....shed and eat twice and all.

I don't have any adults, closest I have are a couple 1 year old females that should with proper care be ready for breeding fall of 2007.

I agree with Jeff, those females don't sound like good deals. You might get lucky at the Sac show, also a San Jose show (my hometown) a month later and another in Petaluma, forget the date. The petaluma show is where I bought Savannah believe it or not.

Also, I am currently planning on selling some of my adult breeders after next season, working on improving my lines and making room for new breeders and my hypo project.
