Axolotls and cleaner fish?

ztous Aug 08, 2006 04:00 PM

I just got one today and have a nice little habitat setup for him but I was wondering if I could use common cleaner fish to help reduce some maintence. In specific I mean corycats, plecos and clown loaches this type of thing. Any help from somoen with experience is greatly appreciated.

The 3 species of fish you refer to are tropical in nature in that they require water temps at least 78 degrees if not in the lower 80's. Axolotls cannot withstand warm water temps and those fish cannot withstand the lower(upper 50's to lower 60's) water temps required for axolotls.

Water temps do not matter, as the axolotls will quickly eat the fish.

Water temps DO matter in that axolotls will quickly perish in warm(tropical fish) temps. As for eating the fish, well, depending on the species and size bought would depend if they will eat them. I know for sure that your common pleco will grow to lengths of 18 to 24 inches and are NOT solely vegetarians. Some Cory cats get a decent size(4-6 inches). Both Cory's and Plecos are armoured catfish and some Plecos have poisonous(not deadly) pectoral spines. Bottom line something will die in the tank.
