Wanting A Redfoot in PA

KAM Aug 03, 2003 08:04 PM

I've been doing research on tortoises for weeks now and finally decided to get a redfoot. I've loved tortoises all my life and am finally in the position to be able to get one. Here is the big problem - I just found out that the sale of tortoises is currently banned in PA. I live in Erie PA and was going to travel to the Pittsburgh show on the 10th in hopes of finding my new addition - I just read the postings here yesterday and found the one about the banning so I called the Pittsburgh people and found out it's true. I'm not sure if it would be legal to get one from another state and bring it into this one. If anyone knows and also knows of a breeder near Cleveland or Buffalo or anywhere in between here and there please let me know. I'd rather pick one up than have it shipped. And I like the idea of being able to see it with my own eyes before I jump in. Also, I'd prefer to buy from a breeder than a store - I like the idea of knowing where it came from and having someone I can contact who knows what they are doing if I would have any questions.
Thanks,
Kim

Check the classifieds for Dick Goergen. He is in Buffalo and raises redfoot tortoises. From what I have heard, Columbus,Ohio show was also raided. I don't know the aspects of what happened, but it looks like the banning is starting and going from state to state. I was told they are concentrating on PA and FL at the moment and will go a few states at a time.
The sad thing about PA, is you can't buy a turtle or tortoise, but you can buy a cobra or any other venemous reptile. Turtles are dangerous because of Salmonella, but venemous reptiles are safe? A 16 year old kid can go to a show in PA and buy a venemous snake, but not a tortoise--go figure.

Thank you teepee. I have already tried Dick and he doesn't have any at this time. Anyone else know of any breeders that would be in driving distance from northern PA? At this point I'm willing to travel 2 or 3 hours(possibly longer). HELP!!

Contact Reptile Addicts/ Pets Plus in Lockport NY. They'll either have some, or will be able to locate some for you. I was there this past weekend, and they have quite a few full grown ones, but I didn't see any hatchlings in the redfoot torts.

here's the address

You might want to question the shows in OH also. I'm not sure if they went the way of PA or not. Its been a year since I went to the Columbus show.
