Soft shell spots in Painted Turtle

gothiclotus Aug 08, 2006 11:59 PM

I have six turtles, four of them are Painteds and two are Blandings Turtles. One of my Painteds is having shell problems. The back of his shell near the tail area is getting soft and pliable on the carapace and right in the middle of his shell on the plastron. All the other turtles are fine, none of them have any soft spots or anything else wrong. Anyone know whats going on, or how to fix it?

Please let me know...

Thanks!

Sounds like metabolic bone disease, here's a good page I found on it:

What I would do is get some pieces of cut up meat and coat it well with calcium and multivitamin supplement; then feed it to the turtle. This way the turtle get enough calcium and vitamin D3 for the softbone and shell. I use human calcium and multivitamin supplement, which I crushed myself. And most importantly, don't forget the full spectrum/UVB lighting, which also helps in the production of vitamin D3 inorder for the turtle to absorb calcium.
