These are sweet looking turtles! I saw some Midland painteds over the weekend and ended up catching this young snapping turtle in a remote area in Ohio. The Midlands were unapproachable. I released the snapper after taking its photo.

Cute little guy - I rescued a mud-coated 7" snapper from the road going to our local Wal Mart a few months ago - unfortunately didn't have the camera with me. He wasn't too pleased with my "help" - kind of like this one.

The tank they were in hasn't been used for numerous years,it contained mostly rain water with some old sludge in the very bottom. jeff

true story, I was on my way home with my mom in the car. Right as we got ready to go up the hill to go over the interstate I said wow what's that in the road???? She said I don't know but don't hit it. A car came by and honked his horn at us, we thought well whatever it is, I think it's live lol. Around here it's given that since we're country people we like animals. I can name so many different types of farms around my house just started because people loved animals. anyway. I pulled up and got out of the car because obviously this was a turtle. I walked up and omg it seemed I had just came face to face with the biggest meanest snapping turtle I had ever seen. He was probably 100 years old, I don't know, but he was old. He had scars on his face, his feet, his shell was pretty battered but had healed. I didnt touch him, because well come on, I had never seen a turtle jump but this one did!!! he would build up his momentum and come completely off the ground, but what was I going to do??? Leave him to be run over on the road??? He was like king of the creek, I couldn't leave him there. The car that honked had turned around and came back to help us. I wasn't picking him up lol I was trying to scootch him with my moms soft handled cane and he bit the crap out of it, ripped the rubber edge off, I wasn't in any kind of position to ask him for it back lol. Anyway, the two boys kind of laid on him, but he could extend his neck up above and behind his shell, almost got the one boy. It took us about an hour of picking him moving him a little bit, ticking him off, letting him settle down a minute, then picking him back up until we finally got him back to the creek. Keep in mind, his creek was quite a distance away. We have no idea what he was doing out in the street. Just got lost along the way I dont know. We took him to his creek back across the field and well we've never seen him again, but I wish I had pictures. One guy even said there is no way that turtle jumped at you, they don't jump, I said, go to sugar creek, find the big sucker and see if he can't jump, I'm here to tell ya, turtles jump lol. Btw, this snapper was ever bit about 45 lbs, his head was as big as a grown mans fist, I can only imagine how bad the finger would have hurt given he'd gotten a hold of it and bitten it off.

I've caught quite a few snappers and raised a few also. They can and will "jump".
Funny thing about the snappers I had, though.
While they were in the water I could pick them up, move them out of the way while cleaning their tank, bump them and they would never try to bite me. The instant I took them out of the water they would turn evil. They would then try to bite anything that moved, especially me...lol
