Anyone Feed Roaches What Kinds are best

sacredpurr Aug 09, 2006 01:58 PM

Hello, I just recieved in the Mail some Roaches- 100 Lobster, 20 Orange spotted and 20 Orange heads. Now I have many questions One is which one has people found to be the best to feed, easiest to keep, fastest breeder ect? Also what should I keep them in? I am fairly sure you can't keep them together...right? So Please if anyone has any ideas on this please let me know ASAP. I didn't realize they would be here so fast! I just ordered them Monday evening from Blaberus.com! I also need to know if Vaseline works as well as bug stop and what do you all feed these things?. Any great website that explains all of this especially about the different species.I also hope I won't have a problem handling them but they do give me the creeps! I raise Beardies and Leo Geckos so I just can't afford such a high cricket and all the other bugs I get for them( I go thru over 25,000 mealworms a week for the leos and over 20,0000 crickets a week for the beardies plus 2000 supers a week, 2000 waxworms a week( for treats)and every now and again I try to raise silkworms. So I am hoping these roaches will be the way to go. I have heard alot of good things about them. Thanks for any help on this matter!!!!

I currently breed and feed discoids, but I still might be able to help you! I keep mine in a big plastic container, much like what people use for leo's in rack systems. I put in some newspaper to give them some places to hide, and make sure to give them food maybe once a week, clean out the container every couple of months. For better breeding results, my understanding is warmer temps = faster growth, more breeding, etc. You can feed them just about whatever, and they will eat it. But of course, your herps are what they eat, so I usually just feed them cricket gutload, and that seems to keep them held over just fine. I hope that was some help! I think Big Apple herps has some stuff on their website that might be able to help as well. Good luck!

How big are Discoids( hope I spelled that correctly) Do you know which would be better to feed geckos. I got the Orange spotted and orange head for size( for the Beardies) but for the geckos I figured Lobster would be good. But now I am thinking how small are the babies? small enough to feed hatchings of both geckos and beardies? Do you know how long it takes to get babies? I have so many mouths to feed that I have to get babies as soon as possible. Thanks for the info you have given me so far. I have some 58 qt by 55 l containers. Is this to big? And my biggest concern is: what happens if some get into my house? are they like the house cockroach?

The full grown discoids are far to big to feed to anything i have. But since they are constantly breeding, I have a good variance of sizes to be able to feed to my leos. The small roaches are good for feeding to babies, but they are fast, so the leos have got to work for it. When i feed my hatchlings I usually put them in a seperate container to feed them roaches so A) the roaches can't hide and B) they actually have a chance to catch them haha. as far as escapees go, be careful. If some escape, come winter they should die off, since they are tropical roaches. But thats just my understanding haha. Your best bet is to do everything in your power to make sure they don't escape. I'm lucky enough to have spiders in my house, and one of them has set up shop next to my roaches. I've seen a few smaller ones in his web, so either A) he's taking care of my escapees or B) he's taking food out as he pleases. I figure even if he is taking a few here and there, I should let him, seeing as how he's protecting my house from a discoid outbreak. My apologies for the extremely long paragraph with no breaks.

Like Flammy, I too raise Discoids. A great site for information on just about any roach is www.bugchick.com. The lobster roaches are going to be by far your fastest breeders. I started with about 40 Discoids (most adults) and it took about 5-6 months before I could start feeding any off. I highly recommend using the Roach Gutload from Cricketfood.com along with various fruits and vegetables. Bananas and romaine lettuce are my Discoids favorites LOL

I would also recommend breeding your own superworms, they take about 2 months to really get going but once they do you'll have them coming out your ears in no time LOL I have so many I need to start getting rid of some I was going through lots of them which is why I started breeding them, the smalls are great for hatchling Leos. I also raise my own mealworms, they have got to be the easiest feeder insect to raise.
