Diamond eggs

kwe Aug 09, 2006 07:30 PM

Hi, I have had a pair of diamonds here in so cal for about eight years now and I could never get them to breed, I am experienced at breeding several other herps but just didnt have any luck with these guys, in the spring they both would act the same and cruise the cage like they were looking for something, well my friend called me earlier this year and said he had a diamond cross male, I checked it out and it looked very diamondy so I put in in with the pair and he didnt waste any time with the female, he didnt mess with the male at all. Anyway, she layed 24 eggs last night, I have them at 88F in a slightly damp vericulite, I need to know what I have to do to have them actually hatch. Thanks if you guys can help me. Kevin

Keep them very hunid and try and keep them at a steady 88 degrees. I actually had a problem doing that due to my own stupidity and had six babies perfectly formed but never came out of the egg. I ended up with two nice babies a few weeks ago. Are you saying you bred yours with a crossed diamond? If so, you should have kept them pure. They are worth a lot more not crossed with something. Hope all your eggs hatch out and good luck. Remember, the 88 degrees and high humidity will be the key.

Thanks for the info, I was running them on the dry side. I wish I couls have bred the pures together, I gave them years to go for it, I think my male is lame. KB

Pure diamonds are much harder to breed than other carpets (hence the price) and your male could be fine. Most people don't manage to breed diamonds until they are at least six years old (the females, anyway).
Did you follow a diamond-specific cooling regime?

I keep these guys outside year round, it gets relatively cold here. I think it is very close to the temps in Sydney.

Excuse me, but whats the point of having are pure animal, if you just "give up" and breed them to a cross?? Just wondering!!
Only thing that will give is alot of crossbreeds out on the market.... Will never ever understand the idea of crossbreeding and making hybrids

Did you cool them/cycle them, in the right way??

Thanks and best regards
