Keeping hots in NC

Drekkel Aug 09, 2006 09:24 PM

I read that i only needed a permit to keep indigenous NC rattlesnakes and the eastern coral snake here, but the website said that it could have changed and didnt really say anything about other venomous snakes, i was wondering if anyone here, since this seems like a more reliable site, knows if its legal to keep hots in NC. ive never had any venomous but have had plenty of experience with snakes. i probably wont have any anytime soon, but i would like to start with eyelash vipers, are these good for a first venomous specices. i eventually want to work up to rhino vipers
thanks for any help and or input.

Hi Drekkel

Yes, you do need a permit for indigenous species. All others are perfectly legal without a permit, for now. NCARK is currently working with the legislature to help prevent a possible ban. You can find lots of information on their website (and hopefully join up): http://www.ncark.org/.

Eyelash vipers are beautiful snakes, but they have particular habitat requirements and their bite can be more serious than some would lead you to believe. If you do enough research on what you need to do to keep them alive and you have the proper tools to "handle" them correctly and safely, they can make a good first hot species. In my opinion, however, they are not the easiest species to start with. Good luck.
