Help with treatment for RI?

tomsey Aug 09, 2006 10:17 PM

My corn snake is making a wheezing/squeaking sound. I assume this is a respiratory infection?
The snake is two years old and dropped eggs 2 months ago. The room temp is always 79 - 82 degrees.
If this is an RI, how is it normally treated?
If meds are required, are they only available from a vet.....or possibly online??

I did research the WORTHLESS archives before posting here.

Thank you.

Brian

Let me just start off by saying, if ever in doubt, take it to a vet.
That being said, is there any chance the snake is getting ready to shed? Sometimes part of the unshed nostril skin will cause the snake to sound raspy. If thats the case, let the snake shed, see if the sound continues. If so, increase the temp a bit and make a vet apointment.
Good luck

Also, what bedding is she on and how much ventilation does her cage have? If you have her on pine (or any dusty substrate) with little ventilation, that could be your problem. If that isn't it, I agree, you should take her to the vet.

Snakes will sometimes succumb to respiratory infections due to the stress of laying eggs. You did not mention if your snake's cage has a heat source. Usually ill snakes benefit from extra heat, so I'd up the temperatures to the mid-80's to low 90's, with a temperature gradient.

Respiratory infections are typically treated with injectible antibiotics - these are not something you can get online, they have to be prescribed by a veterinarian.

Like Tim said she should have another heat source to give a warmer are for thermoregulation. I would take her to a good reptile vet for a check up and possibly some meds. Then I would add a warm spot in the mid to high 80's.
