More on splendida

Brad Alexander Aug 10, 2006 01:55 PM

The last one was too far back so I thought I might respond here. I too have a pair of het splendida from Don Shores. I currently have some eggs getting ready to hatch too.

The thing that I think blue rosy is getting at is there is no real proof of where these things are originating from. I'm not saying they are not legit, nor am I trying to insult anyone. The bottom line, after trying to track down an original source myself, I too have come up with dead ends. Again, that doesn't mean they are not legit. Also, I would like to mention that I think Don Shores is a good guy and I certainly think he can be trusted. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if it were my grandmother that told me they are pure, without proof, you just can't be for sure. I would also like to mention that my pair do not look like Kerby's snakes. Mine look like there could easily be some cal king in them. Not saying there is, it just looks like there could be.

There is gene flow between cal kings and splendida - as they have an integrade range. Unless you know where all wild ancestors of your splendida came from, there's no way to know how close to the integrade range they may have been.

Come to Texas and you'll find the flow between holbrooki and splendida!!! Todd is working with Calhoun County locale. John Lassiter has Calhoun, Aransas, and Nueces counties. Tim Cole use to have and may still have Travis County. I have Jim Hogg County. All locales show intergradation to different degrees. And all are awesome snakes!!!! Tim also has stock from around Marfa and I have stock from around El Paso. These locales appear to be straight Splendida but who knows?????

Hey Todd!!!!
Served a Church in Pearsall, Frio County for seven years. Found around twenty Splendida from little guys to Adults but didn't keep any. They looked cool!!!! For the past two years been in Austin with no chance to get out except two trips back to Pearsall and only found some humungous Atrox!!!!

I remember East Bay Vivarium selling Yuma kings - but they said they were no longer recognized as a subspecies (like brooksi) - but I don't know the history.

Are they now just considered to be a local variation of Cal, or they they considered to be integrades?

In responce, the albino splendida I have came from north of I10 in western New Mexico. I know the person who caught it and the person I got it from. It doesn't look like the splendida from the El Paso area and it could be an intergrade. I know Kerby has some of mine and so does Brad. I have seen albino splendida from west of Langtry and they look to me to be speckled king intergrades but I don't know for a fact. I have some from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Alamogordo, New Mexico and El Paso and they all look alike.

Don isn't that a stretch for splendida/holbrooki intergrade zone? Seems a bit far westb for holbrooki but maybe I'm outta my league here. Haven't seen anything west of Victoria but anythings possible? Looks super splendida to me.

I don't know Todd. My Jim Hogg county pair looks like it might have a little holbrooki influence. They are F1 out of hebbroville stock. They are definitely different from those that Don has from New Mexico and Tim Cole's stock from near Marfa. But might there be variation in Splendida like there is in Cali. Kings?!?!?! That would mean that there could be significant difference in markings that are accountable to intergradation. I wish I had a camara!!!!! Next time Tom Stevens is over I'll get him to take a pic or two of the pair and get them posted. How 'bout it Tom????

Pat

Pastorpat Aug 12, 2006 12:52 PM

This is what happens when one trys to do two things at once. What I meant to say is the difference in patterns might just be variation and not intergradation. There, I think!!!!

Pat

Agreed Pat, lots of variation in getula even our splendies.
