Not eating after move

jlrogers Aug 10, 2006 04:06 PM

About 4-5 months ago i moved my 3 year old female ghost corn to a more open spot in the house for easier access to the cage for cleaning. Since the move she has not eaten anything. I have offered food every 2-3 weeks to no avail. she has been active and still drinks water. She still has bowel movements however they are understandably small. She even recently shed. There are plenty of hiding places in the cage and she even goes under the butcher paper to hide. I have tried showing her the food like i did when she was little but she just ignores it. Is it vet time? Or is it possible that i have a male? (She was sexed at a convention with a lubed metal rod.) I have been reading the forum and did read that sometimes males do not eat in breeding season. Any help would be great b/c i'm starting to worry. Thanks

Did you try putting her cage back where she was before she stopped eating? Is it warmer/colder in the area where she is? Have you changed anything else about the cage, such as introducing new hides?

Did you try putting her in a brown paper bag overnight with the food item and putting the entire bag into her cage?

Did you try a different food item, such as switching to rats or mice? Did you try a smaller size food item?

After 4-5 months, I would be concerned because she might lose her appetite totally for food. You MIGHT (not definite) need to tease feed her (introduce the head of the item into her mouth) to get her used to eating again. It also might be time to get her to the vet, at least for a regular checkup.

No i did not try putting her back where she was before. She's in a 75 gal tank (heavy) and i moved it from upstairs to down stairs. Her lamp is on a timmer so she will get so much heat each day. I suppose the temp is probably a couple of degrees different between upstairs and down stairs but not a lot. the bedding is the same, butchers paper. everything else is the same. She was in a corner upstairs and i put her in the corner downstairs. I will research the paper bag technique.

now that her feeding instinct has been triggered, she should go back to her "normal" way of eating, hopefully. I'm glad that she ate for you.
