That would be "alfalfa." The answer is most yes!

Your uro will definitely love alfalfa! Bruce really likes sprouts, but he goes crazy for "fresh from the field" alfalfa plants!

JR, do you grow your own? I understand a soil pH of 6.5 is minimum. Any advice on growing small plots?
Thanx!
Dan.

Dan,

We have a field of about 20 acres in alfalfa and red clover used as livestock hay. That being the case, I don't really have any experience on growing just a small plot. I know in the fields it is a fairly hearty plant, so I would expect it to be fairly easy to grow on a small scale basis as well. I did go out and dig up a couple plants and put them in some buckets to see if they grow. If I have any luck, I'll keep you posted!

BTW, I know it's listed as one of the items fed regularly on Deer Fern Farms site, so they might have more growing info on a smaller scale.

ok, tried out some ALFALFA sprouts.......ha ha ha and all the ornates absolutely loved them. These things are eating machines.

Alot of our guys enjoy the sprouts, too. Only setback is that they wilt & dry in very short order. Not good when you leave the house at 7:30 & the sleepyheads don't wake til 1:00. We're definitely gonna try small scale propagation when the weather starts to cool.

Keep us posted on what kind of success you have!
