New to Indigos, questions, questions...

TexasIndigos Aug 10, 2006 11:10 PM

Well, due to the politics and greed in this business I stopped working with snakes long ago. By no stretch am I new to snakes but I am new to Drys. I have noticed that nothing is utopic when it comes to snakes and this is very much true of the Drys. I had my heart 100% set on Easterns as I had wanted them since childhood. I spoke with Doug Taylor and he made me want them even more, he was a great guy and shared my ideas of what breeding snakes is all about.

Since then I have been more turned of by the childish politics of the Eastern then any other snakes I've ever dealt with, I want nothing to do with them based on the breeders. I'm sure a lot of great people work with them but a couple bad eggs as they say.

So, I have my heart set on the TX, they seem to be as enjoyable to work with, a snake that unlike the Eastern is truely uncommon and living in a dry part of the Country would suit me better..

My two questions are as follows:

1) Can any of you point me in the direction of somebody working with them? I have a trio that I intend to buy once they hatch but would like a male from another line.

2) Is there any other Dry that's as nice, fun and rewarding to work with as the Texas?

Thanks a lot for your replys and please don't take this wrong. These message isn't full of facts, just the way an outsider sees things. I'm sure many won't agree but it's not always easy to see how turned off people are getting to the way people are acting when you're one of them acting that way.

Thanks for any and all help!

Just a quick point on your item 2, Blacktailed Cribos and unis are super underappreciated. I am sure some of that crowd will step up soon and if interested you can find people to hook you up with cb.

I couldnt agree more-I own both Easterns & Texans however I enjoy my Unicolor every bit as much as his higher priced cousins.

I'm not sure what you mean when you refer to the politics of Eastern indigos. The only hot buttons that I know of are the issues of inbreeding (debatable) and breeding for hybrids (bad, very bad). Eastern indigos truly are remarkable snakes. It's easy to enjoy raising hatchlings and caring for adults well and simply ignore opinions with which you may disagree.

Getting an unrelated Texas male is a good idea. You could easily wait until next year so that your females have an extra year's growth before eventual breeeding. Despite the fact that getting hatchlings to feed can be a royal... unicolors are fine snakes to work with. Photo is a unicolr laying from a couople of years ago. I don't keep them any longer because of lack of space. Fat Bastard, I hope you're doing well.

Steve Binning is absolutely correct..Take his advice(and his snakes!)..
As to your other comments..You can't live in TX and keep Texas Indigos..It sounds like you intend to from your post..
Texas Indies are very common in the state, but are protected by state law..They are not as common as Easterns in the Dry community in part because of that protection and also because there are way fewer TX breeders and breeding animals out there, probably because everyone focused on Easterns and ignored Texans until it was too late..If you've got a committment for 3 you are way ahead of the game!! You are right, they are just as much fun, just as docile and just as big as Easterns..So have fun whichever direction you go.
One caution tho.."I bet you can't keep just one!"

Thanks a lot for the info and thanks for not beating me down.. And if any of you know of somebody with babies that would work for me or if by the grace of god somebody maybe has a lone male they would part with it would great for me to have a chance to work with a couple other Drys.. I live in AZ so keeping the TX won't be an issue.. I even got texasindigos.com just so when I get up and rolling there will be a place of common interest for the TX keepers...
