What should I look for?

HognoseVsPython Aug 11, 2006 07:37 AM

I will be picking up a female normal BP at a show a few weeks from now. I want to eventually pair her up with my male pastel. So what should I look for in a normal in terms of coloration, pattern, etc...

Thanks.

That's a good question...

Nice blushing
Reduced pattern

These are good places to start. Just if you find a female that makes you go, "Oooohhh!" Good luck!

Then you can choose coloration. Pick what you like. I would find out who is going to be at the show selling normals, do some research on them and maybe contact them before the show so you don't end up getting someone's dying imports.

First of all Beautiful Pastel!!!

As for your normal - you should look for a nice size healthy animal that is established (feeding regularly not some fresh of the boat import).

For pattern and color - they say that the lighter the normal the nicer the offspring - and the less brown out you will find. This isn't always 100% true - but it's a good standard. Also you finding a clear belly.

You might want to consider doing pastel blackbacks or granite pastels or reduced pattern pastels - they might be a little bit more for a female - but not outrageous and the offspring may be wicked cool!!!

And lastly - make sure you sex the snake yourself - too often we see people buy females and they turn out to be males - if you sex it before purchase you could just save yourself a lot of unnecessary work and heartache.

Best of luck!!!!

My advice would be, look for a trusted breeder first and foremost. Look at the conditions of their BPs; are they pathetic, thin, baggy things? Or are they plump, nicely rounded, with smooth unwrinkled skin.. this is what to look for. Also keep an eye out for mites and ticks.
That aside; when i look for normals, I look for a pattern that stands out; I like the spotless look of my one female; besides her health and breeder reputation, this is why I picked her. If you're going for a rbeeder, pick something according to size, perhaps apst breedings (pics would be good) and chubbiness
