Westerns vs. Easterns

KevColubrid Aug 11, 2006 03:56 PM

This has always been something I've been curious about...aside from the fundamental differences, such as coloration, geographic location, etc., what are some of the differences between eastern and western coachwhips? Do they require any different types of care in captivity? I own two westerns at the moment, and am getting ready to acquire my first eastern. Personality wise, has anyone noticed any differences between the two? Thanks for looking

Kevin,

Easterns are more aggressive in my opinion! I have owned a lot of both and the westerns seem to calm down the most! The ones you have are Westerns if you want to be general about them. But really they are Red Coachwhips(Masticophis f. piceus). I have noticed they are a lot like easterns too! But I can't talk them down cause the best coachwhip I have ever owned was a piceus, she was kingsnake docile, never bit me! However, I have owned a fairely docile eastern though. So it just depends on the individual, usually older coachwhips seem to do better in captivity. William Huntsman

Hey Will! Good to hear from you. The two red westerns that I bought from you are doing fantastic...neither one is what I would call tame, but they are a whole lot of fun. The male nailed a friend of mine in the face the other day while I was cleaning out his cage, with me he's not too bad, but I keep him away from my face Do you still have that high red western, or did you sell him? Thanks!
Kevin
