Gravid or Not? Opinions please...

djsreptiles05 Aug 11, 2006 08:06 PM

I know she's not a ball, but I am new to Burmese and I am not getting results by posting in the Burm forums. Does this girl look gravid to you? She is acting very wierd as well(hiding under her hide under the substrate and such. She is absolutly ravenous as well and is constantly searching for food.

NO, she is WAY to small and overfed! If you have her with a male, she is a couple of years, feet and pounds short of breeding. Take care of your girl, stop overfeeding her and buy a book about Burmese Pythons.

I do not overfeed her and I am offended by the very thought. She gets 1 large or small jumbo per week and she is about 7-8' at this point. She WAS housed with another snake before I separated them a couple of months ago. Just due to her growth rate and the fact that she needed a bigger cage. I did not expect for her to start looking like this due to the fact that her previous rommie was a male BP(I know preach to me later on that one, but cage space was limited and she was a rescue as well as him). When I got this animal she was emaciated to the point of ribs showing and only about 4' at 1.5 years old. That was in Sept 05. I think I have done very well with her. Do not treat me like an idiot please. I only asked because I was concerned that she looked poss. gravid. I took the pics Wensday and she ate last on last Friday(not today).

Well, if she is gravid that would probably be the world's first Burm/BP hybrid and you could probably make a fortune off of the offspring.

With that said, I seriously doubt she is expecting. I'm not real familiar with Burms, but if they're anything like Balls then they stop eating while their gravid. Growing eggs take a LOT of energy and so does digesting a meal, so they tend to fast during the whole process.

She does look a little lumpy, though. If I was you I would take her in to see a vet just to get her checked out.

Scott,
Yes, I am back from a year in Afghanistan with the Florida National Guard's 53rd Infantry Brigade. I sold my entire collection before leaving but I plan on starting over soon. How are my girls doing for you? Thanks.

I have never had a gravid Burmese eat. They do not want to eat anything after an ovulation to keep from damaging the eggs.
It does look like you are over feeding your snake from your pictures. If thats a 8 foot burm with just a rat in it then you need to get her to a vet because there is something else wrong with her. Could be impacted or have a large cyst. I have seen cysts that look like that in Monitors But never in a burmese.
If you need the name of a great Vet. Try Ivan Alfanso DVM...407-295-7547

I'm saying not.

I've had burms and retics for 7 years. All of my burms that produced clutch did not eat one rodent while being gravid, neither did any of my retics. In the 15 years I've had snakes only one of my female ate while gravid and that was my big female ball python of which I still own. She stopped eating about 20 days before she dropped a 9 egg clutch. But that is very rare.

I had a large female retic look just like your girl in the picture but she was not eating. So I waited and waited for eggs. Nothing. So out of sheer frustration she was carted to the vet for an ultrasound to see if she was egg bound or not. Well guess what? She wasnt those lumps were fat pockets. That's right! Not eggs but egg shaped fat pockets. Nice

Also you said she was housed with a BP male. Genetically I dont think its even possible for these two species to hybridize. But hey stranger things have happened right?

Take her to a good reptile vet and have an ultrasound performed. That should tell you if she is truly gravid or not.
Best of luck.

I appreciate the advice of the people who were nice enough NOT to bash me for a simple ? I really appreciate it. I was concerned for my girl. I am taking her to the vet for an exam.

As for those whom were not very nice in their wording or were somewhat rude. I now know why beginners are scared to come in here. It is terrible that some people with knowledge choose to alienate themselves by being rude or inconsiderate. We should be sharing our knowledge without being ill at newcombers or even people like me that have knowledge, but do not know everything(no one does of course!). If the reptile hobbiest do not stick together and help those who need/want it our Hobby WILL die. Due to the fact that more incidents of uneducated people being reckless with thier animals, more and more states will pass laws against our beloved scaley pets.
