Sun Seed Aspen has changed

HerpZillA Aug 11, 2006 08:07 PM

I'm not sure where everyone buys their aspen, we buy bales of sun seed brand. Aspen has alwasy been cross grain planed, unlike the pine you get for rodents which is planed with the grain of the wood.

Sun Seed is now in smaller plastic bales, and is planed like pine. I personally hate it. It's junk, burn it, ok, you feel my pain. Any one else finding the aspen changing? I love wood working, so I have knowledge on how this stuff is made. Old aspen is a bit tough to produce, but the shredded effect is much better for herp bedding.

The other company we use to get some from was a bit courser than sun seed, but still cross grain cut. Now it looks to be far better than this new stuff. But I have to buy 50-100 bales at a time.

I just wonder if other companies are making this change too?

Thanks Big Tom

I think the brand I use is kaytee. Works well. I got the biggest bag that petco offers. It lasts quite some time and is only about $17-$20.

Thanks Misty. Kaytee makes there own and I see it is still shredded and not shaved. We buy bales like bales of pine you would get for rodents. Sun seed had teh best to be, very light and nice cuts, now its junk. But I need to buy A LOT! lol

Second company I checked is $8-9 a bale. Still trying to get him to lower his price on a 100 bale order. Thast near a small bedroom filled to the ceiling.

I hope to start bagging my own stuff next year. I use to sell various other wood beddings. I have a small chipper. I buy in bulk, and pay a kid to run it thru once or twice. 2 times and it is real fine stuff, frog people loved it. I've been in a real rut, I hope to get back to doing a few things, just to be active again..

Take care.
