potential owner breeder question

captotterboy Aug 11, 2006 10:31 PM

Hey all,
I am doing research into corn, milk, an king snakes. I have a few questions.

1/ How do you determine the sex of a baby snake?
2/ I asked someone a question about a snake color that i really liked and the person said that the snake was 1/2 corn 1/2 cali king. Is this possible? can king milk and corn snakes inter breed?
3/ I have heard that king snakes are the easiet to feed but the most agressive of the three. And that corn snakes are the least agressive but the most difficult to feed with milks in beween. IS this true?

thanks,
jeff

let me see if I can answer all your questions.

For the hybrid questions, you can see the post below.
Cal kings and corns being crossed IS possible, and is very commonly being done. The babies become known as Jungle corns. A hybrid snake.

All snakes have their own personality. Keep that in mind. There are some mean corns, some real sweet kings and some calm milks (I guess as calm as they can get).
I have had trouble with my baby corns eating, but I will blame that on the father of the clutch (which I am no longer using to breed). I also have had No problems with my kings eating. But, I have heard that corns are seldom picky eaters. As for milks, I only have two and they are gluttons.
I hope this helps. I am sure others will post their opinions too.
below are my two jungle corns.

Jimmy, the two milks that I have are a sinaloan and a cross of sinaloan/pueblan/honduran (acording to the guy who sold it). They are both gluttons. I have not had any other milks to compare them to. I havent decided if I am going to breed them or not. I am trying to sell them first. If I don't sell them, I might breed them in the year or so to come. I'll have to upload pics. Looks like I deleted them out of KS pics

Jimmy,

That picture Misty posted is of a "Jungle Corn." Eastern milks usually have a trademark "Y" on their neck. And yes, they can be difficult feeders, although "back in the day" I maintained a wild caught adult for a couple of years. Here's a pic of a baby that my friend found in his house in Cleveland last week.

The last picture, in her post, just threw me off a little.
It looked more like an eastern milk when I first looked at it.
thanks for the pic and the info, Tim.
I thought they could be a bit finicky.

Great. thank you. i saw a picture somewhere that was labled "jungle corn" but i did not know wha that was. Cool.

I own a veiled chameleon. chameleon babyies' personalities and colors are not dependent on the parents usually, and are much more random. From your post, i assume that corn babies are dependen on parent personality and color?

So corns and kings can breed. Wat abou milks and corns or milks and kings?

Thanks for the help
jeff

You should check out the hybrid forum. They could probably tell you all the stuff that can be crossed and what there names are. I am only familiar with Jungle corns. I am sure that milks/corn crosses are out there.

>>Hey all,
>>I am doing research into corn, milk, an king snakes. I have a few questions.
>>
>>1/ How do you determine the sex of a baby snake?

sex can be determined three ways,
they can be probed (small metal probe inserted to determine sex)
or popped (pressure exerted just below the cloaca which will cause the male's hemipenes to "pop" out
and simply by looking (there is enough of a difference that the experienced eye can usually tell)

>>2/ I asked someone a question about a snake color that i really liked and the person said that the snake was 1/2 corn 1/2 cali king. Is this possible? can king milk and corn snakes inter breed?

Yes they can. That would produce a hybrid and....
that particular mix Cal king/corn snake is called a jungle corn.
In my opinion the corn should be dropped from the name.
It should simply be called Jungle.

>>3/ I have heard that king snakes are the easiet to feed but the most agressive of the three. And that corn snakes are the least agressive but the most difficult to feed with milks in beween. IS this true?

Corn snakes are not difficult to feed.
Yes there are occasions when hatchling corns may be hesitant to feed but the percentages are much higher in favor of the feeders.
Kings, I guess on the average, can be more "nervous" I don't like to use aggressive, they don't come looking for trouble they just tend to be a bit more defensive.
But, many many people have kings as docile as corns.
I have a wild caught king at this time that will rattle its tail a little when I open it's container but it has never attempted to bite me.
Not enough experience with milks but if you mean the eastern milk snake I would then have to say I think it would be the most difficult of the three.

hey
You said that you can usually tell the difference between the wo sexes simply by looking. Do you have any picures of the differences or have a good website that i can use?

The reason i ask is that my brother just got a babie corn snake and i liked i so much that i sared looking into similar snakes. Since he has one already, i figures i would get one of the opposite sex so we could maybe breed them when they are old enough and we are ready for that step

Thanks,
Jeff

For some reason they deleted a post from Katy Love about sexing CORN snakes.
AND SHE IS A SPONSOR OF THIS FORUM.....go figure
so for some unknown reason they may delete this, too, but just look at the sponsor list on the corn snake forum main page and click on Kathy Love's CornUtopia.
There are videos that show probing and popping and there are also pictures in her photo gallery that show differences in male and female.
