dripper question

anafranil Aug 12, 2006 09:15 AM

As silly as it may sound I've been trying to make myself an effective dripper for some time now with no success. It is more difficult than it seems...
I can't obtain any of those commercial ones either.
I was wondering if I can replace the dripper with frequent heavy misting, his cage is very densely planted.
I have been doing this for some time now and everything seems fine but I thought I should check first what you gyes have to say.

I have the same type of setup for my panther and I just mist heavily a few times a day, and about once a month i give him a shower. If you really want to try a dripper I have one that is commercial, it's the (Big Dripper) and I could send it to you free of charge.

For my dripper that i used, all it was was a good ole plastic milk carton. Worked great. Stabbed 5 holes in it and it slowly dripped out water right on to a nice section of the potho.

I think that both misting frequently and a dripper are the best ways to keep your cham hydrated. I only misted twice a day and had a dripper and my guy got dehydrated and passed away.

Good luck

how the hell is that possible? Was something wrong with your setup or the cham itself perhaps?

I doubt it died from dehyrdation alone.

Another sickness.

I dont know if there where other complications, but what i was told was that it died from dehydration. After doing some research my chameleon did seem to have similair symptoms.

I bought him from LLL Reptile. Anything wrong with there service?

Havent delt with LLL, however, it would make sense that a company that is entirely devoted to chameleons MIGHT have higher quality, healthier and possibly more know how about them. So, I personally would be spending my own money with chameleon dedicated breeders, and not larger companies.

That's very kind of you but I live in Cyprus,Europe.I think that you were thinking I was in the US possibly....or not?
I'm familiar with the big dripper, that's what I had in mind.

I use a hand pump misting device. It holds about 22 oz and I fill it once a day. I leave it on all the time, and when it runs out of air, it quits misting. I have the mist head pointed up towards the roof of the enclosure. This creates water dropplets on the top that eventually drip down. The rest creates a fine mist for the entire cage.

My cham knows exactly when I am doing this and begins lapping the water from the leaves and sitting under the dropplets.

I shower him about every 2-3 weeks.

Any container with a few holes and filled with warm water would work as well. Go on-line at look at the manufactured drippers...you could probably make one yourself after a visit to the local hardware store.

Good luck.
