Speckled Kings

atheris978 Aug 12, 2006 10:58 AM

I've been searching for speckled kings with the very even distribution of fine speckles over the entire body. It appears that nearly all the speckled kings out there on the market have some form of cross banding on the dorsal area. I've seen some amazing even patterned animals in photos. Does anyone out there know where these originate ? Does anyone know who works with this form of the speckled king ? Will I ever find aniamls like the ones I've seen in photographs.
Many thnaks for anyone who can help

The banded pattern is by far the most common throughout their entire range. The areas I have consistently seen the multispeckled holbrooki are Louisiana, Texas, and Missouri. I have a breeding group from Acadia, LA that is multispeckled that will be breeding next season. I think Todd Hughes(antelope) has quite an extensive holbrooki collection, and he might have something.

Just remember that all holbrooki hatch with the crossbars, and some lose them as they mature while others maintain them. The best way to end up with what you are looking for is to find someone that breeds a locale type chracterized by the multispeckled look.

Wow. Didn't know that --- they all hatch w/ crossbars, and some lose them later. Hope mine is one of the ones that loses them. Around how old are they when the crossbars fade?

I will have some next year from Calhoun county, Texas that will start off with crossbars but will end up like this pair. Lighter male on top, darker female on bottom that shows a little pattern on dorsal.

WOW!!! Please put me on the list for some. Is Calhoun County close to Houston?

I have yet to see many holbrooki that look like the female I obtained last year. Her speckling is very spaced and the speckles are very small. She was approx 20" when I got her.
I can e-mail an image of her if anyone would like.
Many thanks for the responses
