GB Gopher. Head shot

Here is a nice pic of my girl. She is almost four feet long, and is quite large in girth for a female. Is it true that usually males are larger in girth than the females for pits??

The Pacific Gophers I had when I was young, that was not the case.
If it happens in captivity, my guess is it is because of breeding when the females don't eat, and the males become obese compared to wild stock.

I am not sure if it is true. I am in Northern Utah, and I go up the near-by canyon and find them every now and then. Of the ones I catch, I have noticed that the males are a little larger or more muscular than the females of the same length. Also the coloration seems to be a tiny bit brighter on the males than the females.

Are there any coloration differences between sexes that can distinguish the two from eachother that anyone knows of??

The only sure way to know is with a sex probe or witnessing copulation.

Often you can tell from the tail, males will almost always (but even experts have been fooled) much wider base of their tail just beyond the vent because that is where they house the hemi-penis.
