Blue Racer or Lake Erie Water Snake?

saleenadam Aug 12, 2006 08:17 PM

Found this one on Pelee Island in Ontario a couple of weeks ago while on vacation. It's either a young Blue Racer or Lake Erie Water Snake. It had a definite bluish color on it's side that isn't evident in the picture but was noticeable in person. Thanks for any help.

That is definitely a Watersnake.

Interesting looking pattern too. I don't know that I have ever seen a photo of a juvenile Lake Erie Watersnake.

I'd have to agree for sure.
I was looking at my pics for one, and could not find a juvy LE watersnake either. Needless to say, that's a keeper pic for whoever took it. Shoot, the few places I looked for adult pics used the very same one! (2 on a rock)
Anyway, there's no way that's a blue racer.
There is a reference somewhere that the intergrade waters up there have an interesting look, but I have no idea on those.
Great pics of a seldom seen snake.

Hmm, didn't know that it was hard to find pics of juvenile Lake Erie Water Snakes, that's actually the second young one we found and took pictures of that day along with about 30 adults they were absolutely everywhere. I wasn't too sure because I know the young Blue Racers have a similar pattern that they lose with age. I figured it was a water snake though since it regurgitated a small fish when we first found it. Thanks for the help.
