OK People... Need more help.... PLEASE READ (Again)....

Okay,

So tomorrow I'm on my last dose of Panacur, and then I lay off of it for a week... On second glance I really can't tell if the Panacur is even working... I mean, my geckos that are sick with whatever are all eating on their own (all but two), but the tails are still massively skinny and the feces is still very, very runny... The most noticable thing in my opinion is the smell of the feces... Its VERY, VERY sour, almost vinegary in scent... I can't really describe it but its sour smelling. Also, some of the feces are a grayish/white color and very, very slimey in appearance... I think this is because some of the baby lizards are just pooping out the Panacur (I hope not, but I think so). I've never had any geckos infected with coccidia or crypto so I really dont know what to look for... They always say that Coccidia and Crypto are accompanied by diarreah (sp), regurgitation, weight loss and lack of appeitite... But at the same time almost all other parasites (worms, trichomonas (sp)) Are accompanied by the same symptoms.... I'm going into the vet again on Wednesday and I'm really going to push the fact that I think it could be something besides the worms... Has anyone had an exprience with Coccidia or Crypto (stupid question I know)? If so please explain in detail what happened... Did you have that very, very sour smell coming from the feces as well? And what about the color of the feces??? Please help me out one more time.... Also how much water do you all notice with normal feces??? I'm using paper towel as a substrate so I can see a pretty large puddle around some of the poops in select cages... These guys have never come incontact with my sick ones, so should I be worried about the water marks around the feces??

Thanks Again,
Richie

OK lets get going. I would have replyed sooner but been a busy weekend. Well I lost 2 leos to Coccidia. They both showed the same signs that you are talking about. Ohh yes the poop. As soon as you described it I can picture it. Yes the poop is a dark chalk gray color the kinda resembles jello when it is not the freshest and stinks to high heavn. Your vet didnt tell you what worms your leo had? If I were you I would look for a new vet if possible or make that vet check for coccidia because I new one vet that saw just a worm in one a leo I know of and stopped looking but didnt realize and keep checking for other bacteria and protozoa so the leos also had coccidia but the medicine that he was giving her didnt treat both it jus treated the worms so if I were you I would get another fecel and make sure s/he checks for all possibilites and not just stop at one.

Hope that helps
Alicia

Hi there

I recently had a sick colony with runny feces and a pronounced VINEGARY smell, and it was a BACTERIAL infection. There was noticeable weight loss but it was not excessive or rapid. Cured by antibiotics. Cefadroxil (orally) (Cefa-drop, this is a a cephalosporin antibiotic) is what finally worked to cure it. Baytril shots did not work, but it that may have been because the dosage administered by vet #1 was insufficient in duration according to a second vet I consulted.

The greyish poop is probably the geckos pooping out the panacur.

Hi,

Yep, Yep, I'm glad that I'm going to the vet again... I really think theres more to it than just the worms.... So where did you get the Bacterial infection Starling??? I really appreciate the two of you for helping me out (again)... ... Wednesday can't get here soon enough... Thanks again.

I'm not 100% sure where the bacterial infection came from. Over a year ago I got a couple geckos from petco which had a bacterial infection that was treated and cured. 8 months later one gecko of same gex got similar infection again, was treated w/ antibiotics and cured. Some unsterilized pocket in encolure or new infection? Don't know. Colony that got sick a couple months later had similar symptoms, cross contamination via objects or myself maybe? Or unrelated. It does not appear to be transmissible without some phsyical contact, as gecko enclosures next to sick geckos have had no problems. Geckos were not housed together, but I transmitted it to a couple extra geckos via male (put in enclosures for matings). Hard to say where the later infections came from. Bacteria are everywhere, even we people can carry bacteria that can infect our gex. Food can carry bacteria, it can grow in water dishes, etc... However I remembered the vinegary smell as indicative of bacterial infection.

FYI: I did test for coccidia, was negative. Also tested for worms of course, also negative. Animals responded quickly to correct antibiotics (cephalosporins).
