A T-Stat and portable AC question

gmherps Aug 13, 2006 06:53 AM

I just bought a 10,000 BTU AC that is all electronic. It will not work being plugged into my T-Stat. Is there a way to bypass it and get it to work off the T-Stat?

Thanks again!

Stupid computer!

Just curious Greg does the portable unit not have a thermostat on it? If so does it not provide the micro adjustments you are abviously working for? Does it have any input capabilities? I doubt it but you never know.

Lastly if indeed it has a thermostat, they only way I can see would be to re-wire the exsisting thermostat with a 24V model similar to those for Home use. Reasoning because I am sure if it has a thermostat it would use a simple 24v model and to convert and wire in a 120V model would be increasingly difficult.

I suspect this is because your thermostat can't provide the electrical supply the AC unit needs. What is its requirement in volts? Most thermostats are only capable of 600V but the amps may be the problem as well as wattage used.

Yes but it is very difficult to do via the web without actually looking at the unit and the thermostats specifications. It may be or may not be possible depending on a number of things.

Good Luck

Greg,

Is the AC unit 110 volts (designed to be plugged into a standard wall outlet)?

What T-Stat are you using?

Very few 110V T-Stats are designed to handle cooling units out of the box. Some have to be switched internally. There are one or two that will switch automatically.

Remember, most T-Stats are designed to switch heat ON when temperatures get to COLD. Then the switch heat OFF when temperatures get too HOT.

Obviously this process is reversed for a T-Stat to run a cooling unit. A T-Stat then has to turn a cooling device on when temperatures get too hot and turn off when temperatures get too cold.

I'm sorry to give such a remedial explanation that I'm sure you already understand. But you provided little information so I thought it best to write too much rather than too little.

We'll need to know more about the AC unit and the T-Stat you want to use.

It is possible to do but I would need to see inside the unit.. Does the fan run all the time? If it does you can rewire it so that the tstat will kick only the compressor on. Your best bet would be a johnson controls or ranco. Let us know the specs of the unit or you can shoot me the model number and manufacture.
