Brumation

kellybee Aug 13, 2006 06:54 AM

Hi again,

Just wondering if you guys brumate your lizards in their second year? I have read that with some collareds they will tell you when they are ready by slowing down, sleeping more and not eating when their body clock says its time to hibernate, whether you reduce temps or not !!

Does this mean you MUST brumate them, and does it mean if they start to do this of their own accord its difficult to keep em awake? I dont know how old mine are so if it IS their first year, and for Yoda I'm pretty sure it is (He's grown 2 inches, now totalling 11.5in since I bought him), then I dont want him to sleep if there is a chance he's not meant to this winter? Yoshi was full of eggs when I bought her so I am confident she's not this year's baby, its Yoda I'm more concerned about.

They are not trying to sleep at present, I was just wondering in case it does happen...

They love to sun-bathe on my window sill, I left the room this morning for a few minutes and this was what I found when I got back.....

Isnt she just? She bumped her face but she's ok.....

He's pretty too, growing up fast, and filling out nicely now...

He's got lots of green; I like that. They're both very nice looking lizards. That picture of them on the Pooh Bear statue is priceless.

In answer to your question, I have never brumated mine in all the years I've owned collareds. At first it was out of fear that something might go wrong, but now I choose not to because I don't want them to reproduce--I'd have to keep all the babies, and that would not be a good thing

What a worry having lots of lizards running around that you can't bear to part with.

I told yoda what you said, he's a little embarrassed but said thanks

So yours dont try to hibernate in the winter?

lizard_lover Aug 13, 2006 03:48 PM

No, not that I've noticed. Sometimes they go through periods when they don't eat as much and they may lose a little weight, but they always come out to bask year round.

That Winnie the Pooh Was next to the window when you left the room the first time, and not under the bed or something. I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. :O)

This job change has been tough. Some travel, some boring home time, etc. It's OK though. I still have three weeks of unused vacation time coming.

I have to dig out your e-mail too...I was going to reply to one of your old posts on the "other" forum, but haven't had too much time. We really need to plan another trip soon.

I'll send you an e-mail today,

J

That Pooh is a money box I got for my 18th birthday years and years ago, I still put my pennies in it which is why he sits on the window sill, he wasnt under the bed or threatening to kill me (Or anyone else!), but now you mention it he is a bit sinister looking, and has therefore been hurriedly moved to the spare room.

You lot better not give me nightmares, I used to love that money bank !!!!!
