Pictures of my DI's & Many Questions!

kendi Aug 13, 2006 08:55 AM

Hello!
My Desert Igs arrived safe and sound on Weds from KCRD. They're originally wild caught, and have been in captivity for 3 months prior to coming to my home.

I am a little concerned about their weight as they both seem thin to me, although this is my first experience with lizards. They both do eat but only in small quantities, preferring small crickets to their greens which includes collards, kale, dandelion greens/flowers, red leaf lettuce, carrots, squash, hibiscus flowers, optunia cactus pads and plantain leaves.
I am worried that they aren't eating enough.. any suggestions to tempt them? Also I don't know their ages but they were listed as adults, any ideas? They're about a foot long, the female is smaller.

Finally they are currently in a 40g breeder with an Active Heat UVB bulb 100 watt flood, an 18 inch Zoomed 10.0 and a halogen 100watt heat bulb which gets the heat up to 108 in the basking spot. As soon as I can get the heating correct in my 175 reptarium they will be moving into that. I think by Monday they should be in the bigger terrarium which I'm sure will make them happier.. more room to play, they are VERY active and constantly leaping up to try and escape when I put their food in, very smart. I haven't handled them yet, try to let them acclimate and get used to things, I plan not to until at least a week after they move to the reptarium. They are very curious always watching me through the glass.

And finally pictures!

Any name suggestions?? I'm stumped for names!
Thanks sooooooo much for any feedback!

I no expert on the Desrt Iguanas but I think if they are eating after you having them for only a few days, that's pretty good, they didn't look all that thin to me, the veggie diet sounds good, it's debatible if the crickets are bad for the desert iguanas so I stopped feeding me Desert Iguanas any form of animal protein. You might want to get your temps up a little, my DI's do best at 115 basking and 95 cool side. When I feed my Lizards, I feed the Desert Iguanas first becouse one of my DI's will climb up my arm to my sholder and go with me to feed the rest of my lizards, they went from wild cought to lap lizards very fast, you're going to like having these guys

Cecil, thanks very much for the informative link and feedback. I'm working on getting the heating right in the reptarium, I have it to 110 in the basking spot, only 5 degrees more and they can move in! I'm going to stop feeding them crix as both you and the link advised against it. They're now eating much more reliably so I'm not worried they won't be eating enough!

Eve thanks for the comments! They're so fascinating to watch, constantly digging, basking, racing around, trying to eat the same pieces of food. They also watch me, watching them, so expressive, they're very curious!
