Herping in TX

gretzkyrh4 Aug 13, 2006 11:30 AM

I will be heading to TX in about a week and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on herping. For the most part my time will be spent about an hour southwest of dallas-fort worth. I have never actually spent any significant time in TX with the exception of driving through, so any suggestions on where to look or what species to look for would be great. Also, if anyone has any info on the state herping regs (ie. what if any license is required) that would be great.

Thanks in advance to any and all who take the time to respond,

Chris

Since no one else responded...

It has been way too hot and dry here in Texas, especially Dallas area (above 100 several times). I gave up road cruising for this summer, this drought is horrible. What is that summer hibernation term, estivus or something? (Or is that when deer go into heat lol) If it rains while you are here then go for it you may find something but if not, and I hate to say this, just stay inside and watch Snake Wranglers or something and drink some Shiner Kolch!

Well,
Herping was about as poor as you described it. I went out once and didnt see a damn thing. I was going to try a few other nights but when its still 95 degrees at 11, it doesn't seem worth it. As for the TV and beer. I was staying at my girlfriends new place, which didn't have cable yet and is located in a dry county. Oh well, hopefully the herping will pick up later in the fall when I have a little more time to spend in the area.
