Daytona speakers are just Ball pythons..

BobS Aug 13, 2006 01:49 PM

I just looked at the Daytona list of speakers and all the speakers listed are just for Ball Pythons or turtles. Not to take anything away from those neat animals but, what's up with that? We will all have a nice time seeing each others animals and getting a chance to talk to friends in person but it seems like if you were hoping to hear some good speakers for things like Kings, Milks, Pits, Rats and Drys and some obscure less kept species you are out of luck. Kind of bummed folks

Turtles are cool. But ball pythons?

Ball pythons are an enigma. The most morphs and perhaps highest prices in a snake that is likely the most boring pet known to mankind.

But that is just one guy's opinion, and I shouldn't judge. I like rosyboas, and they aren't very dynamic either. To each, their own. (But c'mon, ball pythons? lol)

I agree... but seriously... how many of us actually own "cool" display species?

Most of our milks and kings sit in their black hide boxes all day and are seldom seen unless we happen to catch a glimpse of them during a midnight raid of the fridge/freezer etc... so, in my opinion a lot of my snakes are boring as hell - except my arizonas which i consider to be highly diurnal.

I agree on your other point too... I mean if this is purportedly the largest breeder expo in the world, dont you think they would cater to the interests of a more diverse crowd? I mean come on!?

Who the hell organized this event? Hand over the reigns and lets get something substantially interesting for next yr. geesh.

You need to give Drymarchon spp. or Spilotes spp. a try, as such are almost always out and about, recognize their keepers and harbor incredible appetites. Not to mention, there is something simply incredible about a HUGE colubrid...

Best regards,

Jeff

Boring colubrids? Which ones? My 6 (2 kings, 1 Gopher, 1 W. hog, 1 Glossy, 1 Sin Milk) colubrid snakes are quite active, and seem to spend as much time watching me, my wife & daughter as we do watching them.

I'm waiting for the ball python morph market to crash.
Not because I want a morph, but it might be nice to have a "normal" that is healthy and captive bred and as cheap as Cal Kings ...

The local pet store already sells balls for about $40.00 but they "don't know" the origin, their reptile supplier "brings them in" so I won't touch them.

I'm really a colubrid person anyway. If I do get a ball python, it will be captive bred, healthy, and cheap (hence the waiting for the morph market to crash).

they are the perfect size boid for easy maintenance, and they look cool.. but

They just don't give clues to what they want. If they are hungry, they just sit there. If they are fasting, they just sit there. IMO they are just not interactive, even for a snake.

Although the babies eat anything very well, the adults go on and off feed. While this should be OK and is fine if you have live rats available, it is aggravating when you thaw a rat and your BP doesn't want it, nor does the other BP. Then you have to get a boa just to not waste thawed rats. You could easily raise a boa just on rats your BPs refuse. (BTW, if a boa is hungry, it looks at you with raised head when you open the cage. BPs just lay there with the same old body language, or lack thereof.)

Lump Pythons as they typically just lay there in a lump!
