Genetics question

xblackheart Aug 13, 2006 01:55 PM

I am sure this is an easy one to answer and maybe a lttle dumb to ask, but I am poor at genetics (but learning all the time)

If I got hypo babies in a clutch, does that mean Both parents have to be het for hypo? What if one was hypo, would the one it was bred to have to be het hypo to get hypo babies?
I guess what I am asking is do both parents have to contribute to get a specific phase of corn snake?

Can anerys be het hypo? Sounds kinda funny a black snake that is het for low amounts of black.

To get hypos you would need either
het hypo x het hypo
hypo x het hypo
or hypo x hypo

>>I guess what I am asking is do both parents have to contribute to get a specific phase of corn snake?
Typically I would say yes but with all the garbage surrounding bloodred or diffused or whatever they want to call it I may be stepping out on a limb.
Normally that stands true, though
both parents would need amelanism to create amel
anerythrism to create anerys
hypomelanism to create hypos
etc

Yes anerys can be het hypo...anerythristic doesn't mean black, that would be melanistic, anerythristic means lacking red.
If you combine anery and hypo you get ghosts.
The anerythrism removes the red and the hypomelanism reduces the black.
thus you have a reduced or "ghostly" appearing anerythristic corn snake

Corn snakes and rat snakes..No one can have just one.
