Asian Green eating worms:

Oxyrhopus Aug 13, 2006 03:12 PM

I forgot I had some night crawlers in the refrigerator so I tossed in a few for the asian greens and wamo. It is funny though. The snake follows the worm to the worms head and swallows them head first like its eating a snake. I would have thought it would just chomp them down any way it could but it actually shifts the worm in its mouth to suck it down like a noodle.

Nice pictures.

Earthworms have small setae (bristles) along their body that they use to push through the soil. They point backwards, so it would make sense that the snake swallow the worm head-first.

Well garters and ringnecks tackle worms and they don't seem to be bothered which end goes down first. And I am not convinced yet the asian greens I have seen eat the worm head first because of the texture of the worm, but I think they go to the head to stop it from burrowing in something and latch onto it before it goes down into the soil. They follow it and snif it up and down and then they get to the head end that is where they bite onto it. I am not sure yet, but will keep observing this and take some mental notes of it all. It just might have to do with what you mentioned but I have seen some snakes swallow its rodent backwards for years, so I am wondering if I have a picky green snake or what or do they all feed head first?
